Decorating the Medium Sized House
Experience and care as necessary as with
the big palatial house—more so if anything
W
HILE THE LARGE, elaborate house usually has many natural decora-
tive possibilities, such as lofty, many - windowed rooms, extensive
grounds, trees, etc.—the medium-sized house, with smaller rooms and fre-
quently little or no grounds or shrubbery, demands treatment of an entirely
different order.
The greatest possible care must be exercised in grasping and cor-
relating every natural advantage ; and ofttimes even greater attention
given to overcoming natural disadvantages that may exist.

ROSH HASHONAH GREETINGS
a Happy and Prosperous New Year
TRANSFORMS BACK YARD INTO PLAYGROUND
The lack of playground space in the neighborhood of the Detroit He -
brew Orphan Home, 47 Rowena street, a deficiency which had been fel ,
by the board of directors of the institution, is no longer a problem for the
home. The Cosmos Club, an organization interested in welfare activi
ties, has supplied seven pieces of equipment which have changed the back
yard of the home into a busy playground. Much of the free time of the
children is spent in the open, where they enjoy various forms of recreation .
It is a regretfully acknowledged fact, which no stu-
dent of the Jewish question dares to gainsay, that multi-
tudes of our people have cut themselves loose from their
ancient anchorage, have detached themselves from the
guiding principles and rules of our holy faith, have aban-
doned the founts of living, refreshing waters to dig for
themselves broken cisterns which supply them poisonous
draughts. Numberless are the Jews and Jewesses in our
blessed country of religious liberty who are our co-religion-
ists but by name, by the accident of birth, by memories of
childhood, by force of habit and because they are nothing
else, who lack the faintest knowledge of the truths, veri-
ties, duties and obligations associated with Judaism which
become the sacred burden of all Jews. Many of our breth-
ren and sisters are ignorant of the true meaning and con-
tent of our religion while they conform outwardly with the
tenets of our faith and are, to seeming intent, good Jews.
They bargain with their own conscience and worship at the
shrines of new fangled cults and serve a God whom our an-
cestors did not know.
The Jew of Europe is without soil, American Judaism
runs the great peril to lose what is more precious than land
and soil, or life and limb—its own soul. Somehow, Israel
managed to survive thousands of years without an inch
of land, without soil. But Israel could never manage to
preserve itself as a distinct. separate people without its
soul, its God, its moral passion, its sense of holiness and its
burning fervor for justice and righteousness.
We are not lacking in danger signs, in alarm signals,
warning us of the moral and religious perils ahead of us.
Increasing interrnarriages, abandoned temples and syna-
gogues, broken homes, lowered moral conceptions on the
part of many of our children—they are as many inscrip-
tions of the mystic hand bidding us to be aware of the
great truth that life and death are before us and we should
choose life. May Cod will it so.
