NEW YORK. — Plans have been
completed by National Young Judaea
for a campaign to obtain 5,000 sup-
porting members at $10 each. The
hive will take place during the period
of Nov. '7 to 16 and will he carried
on simultaneously throughout the
country.
Young Judaea is the largest Jew-
ish youth organization in the coun-
try, with 750 clubs comprising a
membership of 14,000 boys and girls.
The clubbs meet regulraly weekly or
bi-weekly with programs on Jewish
literature, festivals, history, current
events and l'alestine, which are fur-
nished by the national headquarters.
The $50,000, which it is the object
of the campaign to raise, is urgently
needed by Young Judaea in order to
maintain its extensive educational
work as well as for administrative
purposes and for expansion. De-
mands from all over the country for
affiliation indicate the natural growth
of Young Judaea sentiment and it is
in order to take care of the new clubs
that special field work is projected
for the corning year.

"The present government of South Africa does not intend to revert to
the practice of its predecessors in the matter of enforcing the immigration
law," declared Minister of the Interior Malan in reply to Morris Alexander,
a Jewish communal worker of South Africa, who asked him regarding the
attitude of the new government towards Jewish immigration. In reply to
Mr. Alexander's complaint that immigration officials have applied the immi-
gration law with particular severity upon Jewish immigrants, resulting in
their almost total exclusion, Malan stated: "While /he government will
continue to use the provisions of the immigration law to keen out undesir-
ables, it will make no discrimination against any particular European race
or nationality. It has already issued instructions to immigration officials
to act in accordance with this policy."
The Commission for National Minorities, together with the People's
Commissariat for Agriculture in the Ukraine, will be in charge of the new
movement conducted in the Ukraine with a view of settling the impoverished
Jewish masses of the towns on the land. The central executive committee
of the Communist party in the Ukraine has instructed the People's Corn.
missariat for Agriculture to grant all facilities to those Jews who are willing
to take up agricultural pursuits on the same principles which are applied to
all other applicants. The work of aiding the settlers is to be conducted.
under the supervision of the People's Commissariat for Agriculture and
the Commission for National Minorities. The capital necessary for the
carrying out of this plan will be sought by the commission. They intend
to make official representations to the Jewish philanthropic institutions
abroad.

The question of admitting into l'russian citizenship two scientists who
applied was discussed animatedly at a meeting of the German Reichsrat
under the chairmanship of the minister of the interior, owing to the fact
that these applicants were Jews. The applicants are the Hungarian Jewish
chemist, Dr. Gyemant, and Dr. Jules Samuels of Holland. The representa-
tive of Bavaria in the Reichsrat was prejudiced against admitting the two
applicants on account of their Jewish origin. On the other side the repre-
sentative of Preemie, State Secretary Meister, pointed to the fact that the
applicants were of high culture and scientific workers. He demanded that
the question of admitting or refusing them citizenship be decided by a roll
call of the council. The meeting was postponed for the purpose of further
inquiry.

To fight for equal rights on the ground of self-respect is the aim of the
German Jews organized in the Central Union of German Citizens of the
Jewish faith. declared Dr. Berlak at the conference held at Wuerzburg of
the Union of German Students of the Jewish Faith, an affiliated body. The
fight must be extended, he said, to reject the doctrines of nationalist Ju-
daism in the same way as absolute assimilation is rejected. In party ques-
tions, Pr. Fuchs, another speaker, declared, the union is neutral, but it is
pledged to oppose all anti-Semitic parties. The German Jew, he asserted,
is a part of the German people since the period of the emancipation. Jewish
emancipation, however, is possible only in a liberal German state and the
work of the German Jews is to fight for the preservation of such a liberal
German state.
