JEWISH EXPULSIONS
By Su'smith lah-Kishor.
l'he seed of Jew-hatred, q hich per-
haps had been already planted in Ger-
mar, by the sudden NM ur,11.n o f a
Duke's chaplain to Judaism, flourish-
ed greatly during the Crusades. In
spite of the pleas of N gentle and
noble -hearted Christiao monk, Ber-
nard of nail- mods, the Jews were
butchered, burnt and tortured without
mercy. The plague of 1318 gave an-
other ipportunity, to certain types of
Christians, to hunt the Jews down.
It is mentioned, as a proof of the com-
parativ- safety and popularity of the
jews in Poland at die time, that not
more them 10,000 of them were mas-
sacred at the time of the plague! So
you may imagine the burnings and
slaughterings that look place every-
where else where the Jews were not
in'favor.
Pitiful stories are told of the way
in which the Jews were slain in many
towns. But it was profitable to some
per pie; for instance, Emperor Charles
IV promised the people of Frankfort
all the property of the Jews, if by
any chance a massacre took place; so
of course, it promptly took place. But
the people were fooled, because their
property belonged to him. Such was
the attitude of the rulers towards
their own Christian subjects.
It did net take long for the people
to realize that without the Jews they
could not get along at all; they need-
ed their brains to develop the trade
and resources of the country; they
needed their energy and keenness and
their ability to keep and to increase
their wealth, so that Christians might
be able to borrow. So the tide of per-
secution ebbed for a while; restric-
tions were placed on the amount of in-
terest that might be charged, and once
more Christians could be seen at all
times wending their way to Jewish
Manes, with pledges or bonds in their
handle.

ignorance to blame the Jews for evils
which were really due to the selfish
and foolish rule of their kings and

found that if they could turn the
people against the Jews, they would
prevent them from realizing who their
true oppressors were; and in this the
rulers were right. Whenever a coun-
try is free and well-ruled there is no
race-hatred of this kind; the worse the
people are oppressed, the more they
hate the Jews, instead of hating their
cruel rulers.
ZIONIST GROUP FORMED
IN CAPITAL OF UGANDA
LONDON.—(J. T. A.) — Uganda,
the country which was at one time
discussed in Zionist councils as a
possible substitute for Palestine for
the building of the Jewish national
homeland, has now seen the founding
of an organization whose aim is to
support the Jewish national homeland
in Palestine. At Nairobi, capital of
Uganda, now known as British East
Africa, a Zionist group was formed
as a result of the activity of Dr. Alex-
ander Goldstein. Many Jewish resi-
dents in Uganda have joined this or-
ganization.
The project of Uganda was dis-
cussed at the Sixth Zionist Congress
and continued holding the attention
of Zionist and Jewish leaders for a
long time as a place for Jewish set-
tlement.

THE entire career of Postmaster Smith has
I been one of service and of helpfulness.
As State Senator he was a leading sup-
porter of the Welsh Libel Bill, which aimed
to create a class libel law directed against anti-
Semites. The passage of this bill was urged
by leading Jewish citizens who found in Mr.
Smith a powerful aid.
Mr. Smith introduced the bill enabling
Wayne County to establish t he new Home for
the Feeble Minded.
He has always worked for the establisr-
ment of playgrounds and greater recreational
facilities.
Mr. Smith is a fair, square, able man—fear-
less, friendly, honest and clean.
He will be one of the best mayors our city
has ever had—a real MAN who will justify
