AMMAN, Transjordania.—Left by
the British government fur the last
three years to set its house in order,
Transjordania is again becoming vie-
tally a part of Palestine, financially
and administratively dependent on
the Palestine government. It is re-,
turning in a penitent mood because!
its independence with the Emir Abd
dullah, son of King Ilussein of the
Iledjaz, as ruler, by the grace of the
British, proved to be too wasteful and
costly.
The cost of Transjordania's inde-
pendence came to be in inverse pro-
portion to the size of the British sub.
slily, the more self rule at Amman,
the less financial support from Lon-
don. As this country's system of tax-
ation and method of farming the tax,
especially among the Bedouin tribes,
is not calculated to increase the reve-
nue, Transjordania would rather re.
liquish some of its right to self-de-
termination than its claim to British
gold.
To help it on its way to autonomy
the British have been giving Trans-
jordania for the last three years a
grant of aid amounting to about
$500,000 a year. The grant woo con-
ditioned on Emir Abdullah's early in-
troduction of order in general, but
especially into the system of taxa-
tion. Another condition was that the
expenditure of the money should be
supervised, not by Abdullah, but by
Rida Pasha Al Rikaby, the then
Prime Minister. A further, though
tacit condition, was that whatever
was to be done in Transjordania
should be done under the watchful
eye of a British representative,
known as an adviser.
