T. The father knows Hebrew; the
son knows slang. The father has
been moved by the profound ideals of
Jewish life, by the pathos and ro-
mance of Jewish history; the son is
I a devoted "go-getter." Americaniza-
tion methods have been too negative,
they have unconsciously stressed the
severing of connections, the breaking
I of traditions; they have also been too
I external; they have stressed new

spirit. Particularly have they failed
to take into the reckoning that in-
stitution which still holds the keystone
position in social life, namely the
family. By unconsciously laying stress
on severing connections with foreign
traditions and by failing to reckon
positively 09th the family background
and jdeals. our so-called Americaniza-
tion efforts have no doubt helped to
weaken the Jewish home, to destroy
its authority, to banish its ideals.
The Talmud Torah, by considering
the fetidly as the unit to be influenced,
by seeking to preserve for the Jew
the deep values of Jewish life, while
taking into account American con-
ditions, by conceiving of Americanism
in cultural and spiritual terms as it
conceives also Judaism, is destined to
effect a finer kind of Americanization
than we have had hitherto. The old
values will not be lost in striving
for the new.
