happy balance between the individual
and the community: The individual
was always regarded as the basic
fact in the development of the com-
munal life and was given an eminence
fry
which perhaps no other people per-
mitted. In order that the community
might be great, Judaism required that
its component parts be sufficiently de-
' veloped spiritually to produce great-
ness. Judaism recognized that a
state could not he morally great if
I
, its people lacked moral and spiritual
culture. In other words ,it knew that
a state could not be free as long as
its people were degraded.
It was a mark of wisdom for our
' sages to say that it is incumbent upon
every Israelite in every generation to
imagine that he had actually gone out
of Egypt, as it is said "And thou
shalt declare unto thy son that day,

The more we assume the respon-
sibility of continuing our traditions,
the more truly emancipated we be-
come. It does not require ingenious
reasoning to disprove the idea that
tradition burdens us. As a matter of
fact, our true emancipation lies in
Cadillac
binding ourselves with the law and in
absorbing and making a vital part of
our life that system of thinking and
living which in essence is Jewish tra-
dition. Let as for a moment recall
' what this tradition is. Let as com-
pare it ,at least in origin, with the
traditions of the non-Jewish world.
Whether we begin to reckon our cul-
tural past with the appearance of
Abraham or with the moral revelation
at Mount Sinai, Jewish tradition be-
gins with God and the Moral Law,
with a formulation of principles rooted
in the highest moral concepts which
the human intellect has conceived. On
the other hand, the traditions of the
non-Jewish world derive from essen-
tially idolatrous concepts and, refined
RS they may have been by time, their
pagan beginnings are easily discerned.
Whereas Judaism springs from the
word of GM, the religions and tra-
ditions of the non-Jewish world clus-
ter around the doings of human be-
ings who. having captured the crude
minds of their contemporaries, were
deemed like God.
The difference between the origin of
Jewish tradition and that of other

o
tisated mind. The future welfa
