A spring style show held at Heyn's
Ready-to-Wear store Wednesday aft
ternoon was attended by more than
500 people. An equal number were
turned away. The store presented
those who were disappointed with ad-
mission tickets to the Fashion Show
a t Convention Hall, where the BMW
performance is given each night until
Sunday.
The show was advertised to begin
at 2 p. in., and long before that hour
the fourth floor of Ileyn's was packed
to overflowing, scarcely allowing suffi-
cient space for the models to walk.
Scores stood on the rear stairway
above the floor to watch the models
emerge from the drjssing rooms.
The eight models made four com-
plete changes of costumes, displaying
the newest spring fashions in coats,
suits, dresses and millinery. In spite
of the handicap under which the show
was given, those who witnessed the
affair were immensely pleased with
the colorful spring modes displayed by
Anna Held, Jr., and her models.

lie is known favorably in Detroit
for his remarkable performance of
"Liliom." In this role he created a
character which stands out as one of
the finest achievements of the stage.
In the distinguished east which Les-

Morris; Grant Stewart, noted actor-
author ; John Westley, Hilda Graham,
N. R. Creagen, Richard Earle and
others.
"The Highwayman" comes here af-
ter a long run at the Playhouse, Chi-
cago. It opens in New York next
month.

The younger Russian philosopher,
like his father, Leo Tolstoy, Russia's
most famous author, enjoys digging
in the earth and watching things
grow. On a tiny estate in Connecti-
cut he lives a life of the greatest
possible simplicity during the sum-
mer time, and spends part of the win-
ter in giving lectures. Count Tolstoy
will visit Detroit on March 10 and 11
for lectures at Orchestra Hall.

avenue, and will continue until March
29. The show is being arranged under
the auspices of the Detroit News and

charge. Other members of the com-
mittee are J. A. Wagner of the J. L.

show. Mr. McDonald has directed
similar exhibitions in many of the
large cities of the country and has
succeeded in malting better homes
shows annual events in ninny places.
The furniture establishments taking
part in the show will display 100
model rooms, each fitted out to illus-
trate tasteful methods in home dec-
oration. The rooms will range from
those fitted out for newly-weds, who
start out in a modest apartment, to
chambers the furnishings of which
are the last word in luxurious ap-

which will be fitted up co-operatively
by all Detroit furniture dealers, there
will be individual displays by dealers,
showing their choicest stocks.
Every afternoon and evening lec-
tures and demenstrations will be given
in the auditorium of the show. Among
those who will speak will be experts
on interior decoration and landscape
gardening.

In spite of this tremendous increase in produc-

The Sixty-fourth annual statement
of the Equitable Life Assurance So-
ciety of the United States gives evi-
dence of the company's continued
progress. The new insurance written
in 1923 totaled $584,700,000, not in-
cluding over $44,000,000 of group in-
surance. The outstanding insurance on
Dec. 31 exceeded $3,400,000,000. Up-
wards of $109,000,000 was disbursed
to policyholders and beneficiaries dur-
ing the year in death claims, matured
endowments, dividends, annuities and
other payments, making a total return
of $1,678,967,000. Nearly $39,000,000
has been set aside for dividends to
policyholders in 1924. A large in-
crease was made in the issue of poli-
cies payable on the monthly income
plan, as well as those taken to pro-
tect business interests and to provide
for inheritance taxes. Over 90 per
cent. of the domestic death claims
were paid within 21 hours after re-
ceipt of due proofs of death. The
statement calls attention to the broad
scope of Equitable service, and to the
many insurance needs covered by the
company's wide range of policies.

"The Bank of Persona? Service"

Can be Made There.

Observing an automobile standing
on the street in the shadow of a tow-
ering, gaunt structure slowly being
transformed by an army of men into
one of America's modern skyscrapers
it would be hard to conceive by even
a vaster army of workers, many times
more skilled trades, scores more basic
materials, and the products of many
more countries were necessary to
turn out the—by comparison—tiny
vehicle at the curb.
Recently while at the Packard fac-
tory in Detroit a visitor asked how
many different manufactured articles,
I other than automobiles, could be built
in the Packard plant. His question
resulted in a survey which astounded
even executives of the company. It
was learned that any article manu-
factured anywhere could be made,
from a bride's trousseau to a locomo-
tive or trans-Atlantic liner, and that
trades among the 8,000 workers rep-
resent practically every known line
of skilled work.
