Dr. Weizmann's serious tone con-

silence for the utterances of Zangwill
in this country.
I thought back to the interview I
had some weeks ago with Zangwill.

Banalities is striking. Dr. Weizmann,
the Russian Jew, with his perfect con-
trol and reserve, appears much more
the Englishman than the other—who,
although born in England, has the ir-
repressible enthusiasm of the Russian
Jew.
Is Dr. Weizmann right in thus ig-

like Zangwill, whose sincerity cannot
be questioned? Or is this the only

way of evading a fast:.,

Chancellor Marx was always opposed to Jew-baiting and has consistently
fought against those who would make political capital out of anti-Semitism,
declares the Germania, the organ of the German Centrist party, which the
new Premier represents. The statement is made in connection with an
"accusation" in one of the German dailies that the new Chancllor favors
friendly relations with the Jew's, countenancing the Jewish element intro-
duced by Minister of Interior Severing into the domain of German politics.

Under a decision of the Maine Supreme Court, written by Judge John
Appelton in 1854, the constitutionality of the new state law requirinig the
reading of the Bible in the public schools is upheld, according to Ralph
0. Brewster, state senator, in answer to attacks which have been made
upon the measure. The issue in 1854 arose from action taken in behalf
of a Roman Catholic pupil in Ellsworth, in the public schools of which
the reading of the Protestant Bible was required, a violation of the religious
rights of the parent and child .being claimed.

Dr. Samul Schulman, in a Thanksgiving sermon at Temple Beth El,
assailed those persons who would limit the title of "American" to people
of any particular creed or to the Nordic or Anglo-Saxon element. "All
views," he said, "which would monopolize Americanism for a particular
race, for a particular church or for a particular demeanor or manners
are altogether un-American. They are today the greatest menace to the
dignity, to the freedom, to the humanity of men for which the American
life stands, insofar as they tend by fostering hatred and misunderstanding
to impair the unity and independence of the American nation."

The advisory council established by Sir Herbert Samuel, the High Com-
missioner for Palestine, will be comprised solely of government officials,
according to an announcement in the official Gazette. Exclusion of civilians
from the advisory council is in accordance with the Colonial Office White
Paper issued during November authorizing the High Commissioner to include
only officers in the council, on which a number of Arab appointees had
declined to serve. The council will consist of directors of the departments
of agriculture, customs, education, health and public works, besides Civil
Secretary Clayton, Attorney General Bentwich and Governor Storrs of
Jerusalem.

Dr. Stephen S. Wise has been elected a member of the executive com-
mittee of the American Committee for Relief of Russian Children, which.
for two years, and until recently in co-operation with the Hansen Relief
Mission, has been doing non-sectatian and non-political relief work among
Russian children. The American committee is now working through the
Union Internationale de Secours aux Enfants of Geneva, under the auspices
of the International Red Cross. It maintains feeding stations and one
hospital for children only in the Ukraine, where over half of the children
cared for are Jewish. Israel Zangwill and Rabbi Max Heller of New Orleans
are among the recent contributors to the work of the American committee.

A proclamation establishing an advisory council has been published by
the order of High Commissioner Herbert Samuel. The new council includes
the directors of five government departments, besides Civil Secretary Sir
Gilbert Clayton, Attorney General Bentwich, Governor Storrs of Jerusalem,
the treasurer and inspector of police. This council, which will include also
representatives of the civil population, Moslem, Jewish and Christian, will
function in place of the legislative council which was to have been elected
had the bulk of the Arab voters made use of their franchise. An official
statement says the commercial agremeent existing between England and
Lithuania extends also to Palestine, which is making full use of the rights
of the most favored country there.

The first attempt on the part of the Ku Klux Klan and its sympathizers
to sway the minds of the Massachusetts legislators cropped up recently
when members were flooded with circulars mailed in New York, attacking
President Coolidge, Secretary' Hughes, former President Wilson, his former
Secretary Joseph Tumulty, the "anti-Christian Jews" and the Roman
Catholic church. The circular was signed simply "100 Per Cent Amer-
ican." "President Coolidge," reads the circular, "is lacking in any real
Americanism because of his attitude toward the reparations conference.

Catholic church and the Jewish people." After attacking the League of
