AN ORPHAN'S THANKS

I am a little boy. I had a father
and mother once, just as your children
have. They loved me and cared for
me :lust as you love and fondle your
children. I had a nice, warm and cozy
home, wherein everything was cheer-
ful, bright and comfortable. My
mother caressed me, hugged me close
to her breast. Saw to it that I want-
ed nothing by day or night. She saw
to it that I was well fed, well clothed,
protected against the inclement weath-
er, against any threatened sickness,
from within as well as without. I was
her constant care; the object of her
love and her pride.
My father, while not showing me
that degree of effusive affection char-
acteristic of my mother, was yet full
of love for me and showed it constant-
ly in his own particular manner.
While my mother looked after my bod-
ily welfare, my father looked after my
spiritual welfare; my education, my
rearing as a Jew and man. My life
was one of happiness and bliss, while
my future looked bright and cheerful.
Now, all this has been changed for
me; why and wherefore I do not know.
My father died a long time ago—how
long ago I don't know, but it's been
• long while; longer than I can re-
member—while my mother followed
him on the Great Road some time ago.
She died a slow and lingering death as
a result of undernourishment day by
day. I was left alone, a little child
with no one to care at all whether I
lived or died; ate or starved; was well
or sick. I don't know what would
have happened to me if it weren't for
the kind-hearted Central Relief, 13
Astor place, New York City, in far-off
America, which came to my assistance
as well as to the assistance of thou-
sands of other little boys and girls
like myself. I still remember how ter-
ribly I suffered before your kind-
hearted man found me, all starved and
naked and crying for some one to give
me a piece of bread or to take me into
his house. But nobody did until your
good man came along and said kind
words to me and promised to be a
father t ome!
May God bless him, and you, kind-
hearted men who sent him to us!
