1102 North Saginaw St.

In 1901 the Durant Dort Carriage
Company started the manufacture of
varnishes for their own consumption
on the present site of the Flint Var-
nish and Color Works. In 1904 the
Buick Motor Company started the
manufacture of some of their paints
used on their products. In 1909 these
two departments were consolidated
and the machinery in the Buick
Motor Company plant was moved
over with the Varnish Works.
The Flint Varnish Works was in-
corporated on Dec. 9, 1905, as a sep-
arate institution. The capital stock
was increased on Nov. 19, 1913, and
again on July 20, 1916. On the later
date the name was changed from the

nish & Color Works. It was found
advisable on Dec. 13, 1921, to again
increase the capital stock of the corn.
pany. The officers are:
Ilunter Grub, president; F. M.
Howard, treasurer; W. J. Sohlinger,
vice-president and general manager;
R. S. Nichols, secretary.
In 1920, in order to meet the de-
mand for its products the Flint Var-
nish & Color Works purchased the
old Chicago Varnish Company and
are now operating that plant as the
Chicago Varnish Works. The opera-
tions of that plant are under the di-
rect charge of the assistant general
manager, W. F. Tierman, and the
Flint plant is operated under the di-
rect charge of the assistant and gen-
eral manager, J. T. Edgerly.
