Charles Proteus Steinmetz.
Charles P. Steinmetz died on Friday, October 26. One of
the rare geniuses in the history of the world passed away. Ile
was not only a great electrician, a master mathematician, but
he was acquainted with the political, economic, social prob-
lems of the day, and took a genuine and profound interest in
all these problems.
Steinmetz was not born in the United States, He was a
German, who was compelled to leave Germany and go to Switz-
erland on account of his radical political beliefs. Later he came
to America. This was in the 80's, when, America had no immi-
gration restrictions and was truly a haven, a refuge, an asylum,
for the oppressed of the old world.
Physically, Steinmetz was mis-shapen and undersized, and
it is related that when he entered at Ellis Island, he was suffer-
ing from a swollen jaw, contracted in his voyage across the sea.
And, were it not for a friend of his who accompanied him from
Switzerland to America, he may have been deported, which
would have been an incalculable calamity to the whole world,
for it is very doubtful whether his genius would have had such
a vast field for expression in any place other than enterprising,
expanding America.
We are very reluctant to point a moral and adorn a tale
with such a collosal intellectual figure as Charles P. Steinmetz,
but we cannot refrain from so doing under the existing condi-
tions regarding immigration in America.
If a Charles P. Steinmetz would come to our shores today,
he would unquestionably be denied admission. He may have
. come at a time when the quota was filled. His unorthodox eco-
nomic and political beliefs would be sufficient reason to deny
him admission. The immigration officials would decide that he
' would become a public charge on account of his physical de-
, fects.
It is high time that our immigration laws were modified and
that some regulations be framed that would not exclude from
our country embryonic Steinmetzes, for who knows, but some
Ste'nmetz has been denied admission to the United States and
returned to Europe broken, dispirited and with consequent
irreparable loss to us.
Much Ado About Nothing.
Samuel Untermyer, in a letter to Nathan Straus, denounces
Zangwill's attacks on Zoinism, and characterizes them as reck-
less, irresponsible and fantastic.
It will be recalled that Nathan Straus repudiated Zangwill
and in no uncertain language denounced his spech delivered
before the Jewish Congress. Mr. Untermyer has written to Mr.
Straus upholding and supporting Mr. Straus.
We have read the letter of Mr. Untermyer from beginning
to end with very great care and are very sorry to say that no
case was made out against Mr. Zangwill. For we cannot be
persuaded that mere denounciation invective and sarcasm are
sufficient to answer arguments of Mr. Zangwill, and we are
unable to find, in the letter, anything but strong language—
ridicule and statements which almost border on the libellous.
To quote from the letter: "after the amazement and indignation
experienced by me, in common with all Jews who are devoting
themselves to the problem of rebuilding Palestine for our un-

1 itrucitve address, I rejoice greatly that you took occasion on the
following day to repudiate Mr. Zangwill's views emphatically
' and unqualifiedly." We quote further: "the hollowness and
, meaninglessness of Mr. Zangwill's widely heralded message, as
some of the announcements had it, he would vouchsafe a new
dispensation to the Jewish people, is no better illustrated than
in his major complaint and warning. I am referring of course
to his diatribes against the British government and the leaders
of the Palestinian movement who are carrying the heavy re-
sponsibility of furnishing the vast funds that are being required
from day to day. Here Mr. Zangwill outdoes himself in
satire and invective against the men who are carrying this bur-
den which he is doing nothing to relieve, but is making more
difficult by his constant fire of destructive criticism and his gro-
tesque nostrums."
In another paragraph, Mr. Untermyer writes: "Note on the
other hand the irresponsible and provocative manner in which
Mr. Zangwill approaches the Arab problem in another part of
his befuddled and befuddling lucubration."
We could quote Mr. Untermyer's entire letter, which is in
the same vein as the excerpts. The "whole show" is given away
at the very outset in the "amazement and indignation exper-
ienced by me." Mr. Untermyer knows full well that if he were
presenting a case to the Court of Appeals of the state of New
York, or the Supreme Court of the United States, that he would
have to rely upon reason, facts and logic, and not rely upon his
emotions to show the weakness of his adversary's case and
destroy the fallacies of the opposing argument.
We do not like to believe that Mr. Untermyer is like the
debater, who realizes the weakness of his own position and re- r
sorts to name-calling, thinking thereby to get a favorable de-
cision from a prejudiced audience.
In these columns there appeared recently an editorial on
Zangwill and Mond. in which we took the position that tough-
mindedness and realism and not illusion and sentimentality
were the necessary requisites in the solution of all the pressing
problems of Jewry.
We are looking for light and reason, and hoped that Sam-
uel Untermyer, president of the Keren Hayesod, would furnish
us with some of this needed light, but we are sorry to be com-
pelled to say that we are very much disappointed and we hope
that Mr. Untermyer will abandon the attitude of "amazement
'and inclination" and use his logically trained mind and reason.

The Jewish National Fund.

What is the Jewish National Fund? The Jewish National
Fund was created by a resolution of the Fifth Zionist Congress
at the end of 1901. The purpose of the Fund is the purchase
of land in Palestine, this land to be owned by the Fund, and if
Palestine should ever become a, Jewish State, to belong to the
State. The land so purchased is to be given to the Jewish pio-
neers with the condition that these pioneers work the land, and
when the pioneers have become self-supporting to pay the rent-
al value to the Fund or to the Jewish State.
The Jews of Europe, who may become pioneers in Pales-
tine, have not the wherewithal to purchase the land, and the
only way they can be encouraged to become Chaluzim, is to
give them the opportunity. By doing this, two definite things
are accomplished ; first, the European Jew is relieved of the ter-
rible distress from which he now suffers, and second, he be-
comes a self-supporting, self-respecting, clear-eyed, vigorous
human being, the very backbone of a prosperous community.
Even though one may not believe that Palestine will ever
become the homeland of Jewry, an autonomous sovereign Jew-
ish state, yet, if he is a Jew, one can whole-heartedly support
the Jewish National Fund, For any movement which actually
rehabilitates, retrains and makes worth-while men and women,
is more than worthy of support.
Dr. Chaim Weizmann states the matter in a sentence:
"The Jewish National Fund must stand in the center of our
work,"
In this we are in entire accord with him, for the acquisition
of the actual land in Palestine is constructive and basic work
under all conditions.

out of such an insignificant act of charity on his part.
