Detroit's Orchestral season was for
mally opened on Thursday night when
the Detroit Symphony Orchestra be-
gan its tenth season. Mr. Cabrillo-
witsch conducted, and received a warm
reception at the beginning of the con
cert. Efrem Zimbalist long held as a
favorite in Detroit, was the soloist and
played the Brahm's Concerto in D-
Major. Mr. Zimbalises playing was
characterized by purity of tone and
almr st perfect technique, although it
cannot be said that he aroused real
enthusiasm from his listeners. To the
student or master of the violin his per-
formance must have been noteworthy,
but to the average concert goer, it was
a little boo refined and perhaps nut ,
quite theatrical enough to appeal. The
program opened with Beethoven's
Overture to "Len( re" No. 2 and
elcsed with the Tschaikowsky's Fifth
Symphony. The orchestra played'
with feeling and solidarity of bone.
There was very little raggedness, and
the general ensemble was exceedingly
fine. A few changes in the personnel
of the orchestra are noted and there
is a perceptible improvement in the /
brass section. Mr. Gabrilowitsch gave
a brilliant nailing of the symphony,
and he received vociferous applause
at the close of the concert. The first
- Pop" concert of the season will be
given Sunday afternoon, October 28,;
under the leadership of Victor Kolar.
Nina Koshetz, soprano, will be the so-
oist on the occasion, and the program
:ill be made up entirely of Russian
compositions.
