('an the inhabitants remain passive when the sound of
the enemy's trumpet is heard near the walls of the city?
When the tiger slinks into the town and seeks to tear and
destroy the dwellers, shall w'e stand by and watch him in
his destruction? The jaws of the tiger are seeking and
dripping with blood and, indeed, the tiger seeks honor for
his terrible deeds. The lion does not roar after a meal lit
straw but after a feast of flesh, declares the Talmud.
The idea of bowed submission, the distant hope for a
miracle of deliverance, are nol practical. It is true that
the Jews do not battle with their anti-Semitic opponents—
with the help of God they have overcome numerous such
obstacles. But we cannot rely upon miracles only. The
Kire of wailing for the miracle to happen is too dear, tlie
toll is too he as
- Anti-Semitism and other racial prejudices NCI' the can-
c•rs of civilization. Doctors tell us that cancer eil,B he
cured by radium--these cancers of civilization can only be
cured by applying the radium light of truth. On the one
hand we hear that the Jews arc too successful, too am-
bitious, too forward ; on the ether heed, we aro told that
they are too backward, too lazy, criminals, parasites. It
takes only all ordinary observer to see that there are indi-
viduals in every oily who come within any description.
\Ve must have people who not only observe but will make
known their observations to the w o rld. Such a course of
observation, writing, printing, speaking, would be expen-
.Si1'e, it is true, but nothing should be considered too ex-
pensive for the spread of Truth and Salvation.
The spread of anti-Semitism is note gaining momentum.
There are anti - Semitic newspapers, hooks, pamphlets,
spea k ers, preachers. As it gains the world turns more
and more back to the medieval ages and the standards of
the Inquisition. The "Hymn of Date" has become the song
of t h e peace lovers.
In the Rosh Ila-Shanah service there comes first the
Shofar call of righteousness, the tone of Truth. Then comes
the call of the broken its of trouble and terror, She-
\ ;trim. II is little wonder that the congregation is awe-
struck at its sound. In the order of blasts, the last Tekiah
is again t he note of ' Truth. This is what we hope for.
reel we must not merely hope. 1Ve must work and strive
to spread the light of Truth and to Ward I IT the attacks
of the enemy.
\ye IIIIIst strenuously persevere in the task of preserving
Judaism and its great religious principles, and we must
bring up our young with a love for the faith and its tradi-
tions. We must labor with unconquerable spirit at the litany
tasks which confront us in •retz Israel. And those Of us
who art . not in the Land of our Fathers should bend every
efrort and make every sacrifice to assist the great work.
Zion rebuilt will be a new inspiration to Jewish life. a great
fortress of religious and moral strength whose influence
will be felt over the whole world.

President Union of American Hebrew Congregations.

The Union of American Hebrew Congregations extends
to its constituents and to all Israel in America and in Eu-
rope its best wishes fur a Happy New Year. May the
coming year be filled with !natty blessings for our beloved
country. fur the .lewish people and all Mankind. May the
New Year be kinder to a suffering world than the year
that has passed into the Great Beyond.
NVithin the folds of Israel in America there is much
c ause for congratulation. Not only has this been a year
of serenity and peace, but it has been a year of Jewish
striving. All organized phases of Judaism are moving
to \yard a strengthening of the faith, an intesifying of in-
telligent understanding of the ftunlamental tenets and root
principles of the Jewish religion.
The New Year will, it is hoped, witness a great Jewish
revival in America, a revival that will bring many bless-
ings to us as Jews and as Americans. In promise. the New
Year dawns upon us with every assurance that it is usher-

BERLIN.—(d. T. A.)—The med-

ical and sanitary needs Of Russian
.lewry form the principal part of the
discussions at the conference called by
the provincial committee of the Oze,
an association for the improvement of
health conditions among Jews.
Seventy accredited delegates are
taking part in this conference, which
was opened Monday evening. In ad-
dition, a number of representatives of
friendly organizations are participat-
ing. The establishment of a Jewish
World Union for sanitary relief, to
lie known probably as the Red Mogen
David, on the lines of the Internation-
al Red ('runs, will engage. the atten-
tion of the Conference.
The unexpected appearance of Prv-
fessor Albert Einstein was the O•ea-
sion for many cheers. The scientist,
who WAS made an honorary chairman
of tl e conference, declared this meet-
ing showed that all Jews were united
on the question of public health, and
tL
I
that the efforts of the Oz.. merited
the sympathy of the whole world.
The distress of the slew's of Russia
should force these engaged in improv-
ing health conditiens to redouble their
efforts, said Eliezer Rosenthal, in
opening the conference.
The health department of the Min-
i-try of Interior sent a representative
to the electing. He declared the work
I I of C e Oze was essential inasmuch as
it helped "to shield all countries bor-
dering on the East against the epi-
demics of the East."
Dr. Klee, representing the Jewish
•vmmunity of Berlin, expressed the
hope that the East European Jews
and those of the Western countries
would unite in solving the problem of
building up Jewish health and Jewish
physique.
Representatives of the Jewish
World Relief Conference, the Ort and
the J. D. C. welcomed the conference.
The sanitation department of the
League of Nations sent a telegram ex-
tending its greetings to the meeting.
