tion with one or another of his various

leaders, a devoutly religious Jew and
vitally interested the proletariat, from
babies to centenarians. And always,
of course, in the capacity of chairman,
toastmaster, presiding officer or what-
ever else the chief noise be termed in
official parlance.
In time, however, the relief work of
the most interesting institution grew
to be accepted as a matter of course,
as basic and elemental, even, as the
universally recognized necessity for
food and shelter. With the formation
of this attitude came the lessening of

awe that familiarity brings. If an ar-
tist died it was assumed as only nat-
ural that Beryl should do the right it

anxious to advance politically, why of
