WHAT MAKES HOME SWEET

Maurice Swartz's Art Theater

The familiar "Home, Sweet home"
is said to have been written by John
Howard Payne after experience and
hard knocks had taught him to appre-
ciate the home of his childhood as
contrasted with the wretchedness and
misery to be found in the great world
without.
A similar contrast might lie drawn
today between the home that is well
kept, comfortable and orderly by vir-
tue of the electrical service the house-
wife has at her command and the one
that evidences confusion and drudg-
ery because inefficient servants and
old-fashioned housekeeping meQ)ods
are depended upon.
The former is Melee,' "Home Sweet
Home," the latter most distinctly is
not.
T$ various uses to which elec-
tricity is now put in the home had
not been envisioned when John How-
ard Payne was a boy. Then cook-
ing, cleaning and washing depended
solely upon the energy and labor of
women.

By ELBERT AIDLINE-TROMMER.

Now, the wise home-maker calls
upon the labor-saving aid of elec-
tricity and keeps a cleaner, sweeter
home with about one-quarter the ef-
fort that was then necessary. Elec-
tric lights have sent the ill-smelling
lamp into the limbo of forgotten
things; the unsanitary broom, mop
and duster were relegated to the dust
pile, giving place to the rapid, effi-
cient electric cleaner, and the wash-
ing machine and ironer have convert-
ed the old dark and sloppy basement
into bright and orderly quarters. The
electric range has made the dectric
kitchen a clean, cool haven; especial-
ly so when flanked by the electric re-
frigerator and all the motor-driven
electric appliances such as the egg-
beater, etc.
And, "be it ever so humble," the
modern home is beginning to be in-
deed "home, home, sweet, sweet
home" because of the manifold ad-
vantages, both time and labor-sav-
Mg. which electricity has brought
to it.
