JEWS OF UKRAINE
MIGRATE TO CITIES

Continuous Movement Report-
ed from Villages and
Smaller Towns.

yl, .,IYIW—(J. C. B.)—There has
been , continuous movement during
the lo-t quarter century of the Jew-
r eulation of Ukraine and White
ish
Russ, from the villages into the
r towns, and from these into
the larger cities, according to sta-
tistii which have been just made
available here.
Ti,.• figures for the province of
Klee -how that whereas in 1897 18
per cent of the Jewish population
lived in the villages, 49 per cent in
the small towns and 33 per cent in
ivics, the census of 1920, the re-
the c
au it, of which are only being com-

melded upon, proves that the Jewish
percentage in the villages has fallen
as low as 4 per cent, while the popu-
lation in the villages rose from 33 to
71 per cent.
In the province of Chernigov, the
Jewish villags population was 34 per
cent of the entire Jewish population
in 1M97; in 1920 it fell to 12 per
cent, whereas the population of the
larger cities rose from 48 per cent
in 1897 to 75 per cent in 1920. The
figures for practically all the prov-
inces in the Ukraine 4111■1 White Rus-
sia, much affected by pogroms and
civil war, show a similar process.
This is due to the fact that during
the period Of pogroms, counter-revo-
lution and civil war, and foreign
military interventions, the Jews
flocked from the villages, where they
considered themselves unsafe and at
the mercy of peasants, to the cities,
where authority was comparatively
better established.
In the non-Jewish Russian popula-
tion a reverse process is noted. In
the days of famine and reduced ag-

ricultural production, the village was
the only place which had food and
masses of people gave up living in
the cities for life in the village.
The unlimited opportunities of
free education offered by the Com-
munists on their accession of power
had the effect of attracting thou-
sands of Jewish young men and
women to the higher institutions of
learning which are to he found in
the cities. The renewal of private
trade under the new economic policy
likewise accentuated the tendency of
the Jewish population to concentrate
in the cities.

The Greatest Birthday
Sale in Our History

This sale, that time has permitted us to
inaugurate, is in a sense an expression of
gratitude—gratitude for the loyalty of our
customers—gratitude for their confidence
and for their faith in us. There are only
a few retail stores that survive the half-
century mark, and to do that there must,
of necessity, he something more back of
them than the mere ringing of the cash
register bell to signify that "another sale"
has been made.

All those principles that make for honor
and long life, either in an institution or in
a man, you will find exemplified here, not
only during this Fifty-Second Birthday
Sale, but during every hour of every busi-
ness day. That you will find it pleasant
and profitable to buy here, there can be
no question. Many, many thousands of
folks have found it so in the past half
century.

To us there is • justifiable pride in celebrating

and faithful co-operation of our employes—most

of whom have been with us many years. We
gladly acknowledge oor indebtedness to them for
their help in placing the House of Bruahaber in
