Conclusion of Pesach:

will be held in the temple for the last
day of Pesach. Please note that the
time is 10 o'clock. The sermon on
this occasion will be preached by
Rabbi Berkowitz.

Closing Bible Lecture:

•

On this Friday evening, April 0,
Rabbi Franklin will deliver the last
of his series of Bible lectures. It is
hoped that a large group of people
wilt attend this final meeting of what
has proven to he a most earnest and
successful study circle.

out a case for the Jewish race.

I was interested in the item appearing in a Jewish exchange re•
fining to a difference of opinion between Princess Ca...sena
Countess Speransky and Rabbi Stephen Wise. The countess, in one
of her Saturday Evening Post articles, took the opportunity to say
that Rabbi Wise, Pier a two-hour audience with Admiral Horthy, the
reactionary ruler of Hungary, "was satisfied that the Hungarian ruler
wo fair in his attitude toward the Jews." On this being called to
Rabbi Wise's attention he denied it. He took occasion to say that
Horthy's altitude toward the Jews of Hungary was as unjust as that
of any land in Europa No one knowing Dr. Wise could for a mo-
ment believe that he would have praised such a typrant as Horthy,
who has shown himself to be one of the worst reactionaries in all
Europe. The trouble with our good friend, the princess, is that she
lived so long among the Russian nobility that she can find only good

Motion Pictures:

Usually the Archbishop of Canterbury is a very knowing person.
He is, generally speaking, • man of this world as well as of the spiritual
world. And he really should have sense enough to know that when
he lends himself or his name to the promotion of missions to the Jews
that it is quite ■ n abetted thing, you know. I have known of the Lon-
don Society for Promoting Christianity Among the Jews for many
years. I am not sure, but I think that astonishnig organization
"milked" its "angels" to the tune of some $15,000 for the conversion

of two, or was it three, Jews?

aysee-y

This Thursday afternoon at 4
,'clock the motion pictures will be
shown as usual for the children of
the School of Religion. The pictures
have been well chosen and the popu-
larity of these entertainments has
been proved by the large numbers of
our boys and girls who attend.

Young People's Temple Club:

The board of the Young People's
Temple Club has been planning far
ahead. They wish to announce that
a very novel and original entertain-
ment has been planned for the next
affair. The date will be net for the
last week in April and full announce-
ments will be made shortly.

The "Bethelite:"

The first number of the Bethelite,
a p a per edited by and for the boys
and girls of our School of Religion,
appeared last Sunday. It met with
immediate favor and a large number
of copies were sold. There are about
100 copies left and these can be ob-
tained at the temple office.

These missionary chaps usually work along the same lines; they
tempt the child with ■ stick of candy, w to speak. In Safed and
Jerusalem the soul , with an eye to the practical, established
hospitals, which, of course, had behind them ■ thoroughly dishonest
and quite un•Christian-like spirit of using them as "baits" with which
to catch Jews suffering from bodily ailments in the hope that through
the cure of the physical these pious souls might "bring these Jews to
Jesus." I am not so much exercised over the fact that these mis•
guided zealots "convert" • handful of Jews to Christianity as I am at

Saturday Story Telling Hour:

If the present Archbishop of Canterbury can believe the trash that
I find in the book of the society of which he "approves," then he is
about as guileless as the late Dr. John Hall, who was duped by a de-
signing and utterly conscienceless missionary by the name of War.-
waik—I may not have spelled his name correctly, but it is near enough
to identify him to those who remember the use of the famous New
York minister. Here is the sort of thing one find.. in the booklet
called the "Mission in Galilee:"

The astonishment of Jews at the certain hope of Chris-
tians with regard to the Resurrection is not easy to describe.
But when explained that that hope is based entirely upon the
fact that Christ rose from the dead, their astonishment often
changes to positive awe and reverence."

to

I earnestly advise the London Missionary Society to the Jews
send their literature to the Rev. Percy Stickney Grant—he seems to

have the same doubts as the Jews.

Writing about the missionaries recalled to my mind an article I
had read in • recent issue of The Smart Set, called "The Word of
God," and was written partly by Henry Mencken and partly by George
Jean Nathan. It is quite interesting in connection with the dogmas
that so frequently possess a sect to the exclusion of religion. Here

is what they say:

"Of all thgneligions practised in this world by illiterate
races, Christianity in its various forms lays the heaviest stress
on
upon minute and childish details of doctrine. The reasons
which, for example, a Catholic bases his belief that his Pro-
testant neighbors will go to hell are such as would make the

average intelligent Buddhist or Shintoist belch with astonish-
ment. Very few of them have to to with the essentials of
faith; moat of them simply concern trivial matters of discipline
and ceremonial."

Again:

"Among the Protestants there is an even more absurd petty
dodges. It is, for example, a cardinal doctrine of the Baptist
faith that a candidate for immortality must he completely sub-
mersed in water so that not even his ears protrude. Expound
such a doctrine to any Chinaman above the mental level of a'
coolie and he will snicker at you behind his hand .... all these
gentlemen at the slime time here heavily engaged in 'civilizing'
Brahmins, Parsee and Confucians. It was precisely as if three
Rotary Club secretaries had essayed to instruct l'rofessor
Einstein in mathematics or table manners."

Louis Marshall said at • meeting in New York:

"We hear a great deal about missionaries and people curse
them; people, however, who don't even send their own children
to Talmud Torahs and Ilebrew schools. I would rather they
learn some morals and ethics from the missionaries than to go
ignorant. It is our obligation as Jews to give them the oppor-
tunity for Jewish education and training."

I fully realise that Mr. Marshall was indignant, and properly so,
because of the failure of the Jews of New York to consider sufficiently
the religious education of their children. Nevertheln it was very
unfortunate that he should have uttered • statement that can be so
easily misused by missionaries in their conversion campaigns.

Cop'. visit to this country was not in vain. The interest that
attended his coming has had the result of crystalizing a movement
known as the National Association to Advance Scientific Healing.
Dr. Edward S. Cowles, specialist in nervous and mental disorder*,
was appointed one of • medical committee of three by the Episcopal
Church to study healing, is responsible for this association. Among
the promoters is Samuel Untermyer. It marks • step in the direction
of organized "healing" in this country and • recognition least offi-
cially of the need for work along the lines of Coue—which heretofore
has always had the earmarks of "irregularity."

And so many Jewish people are subjected to nervous disorders it
of
might be interesting for them to know just what is the purpose
this new society:

"The promotion of a more scientific treatment of nervous
disorders, based upon a thorough examination of the patient,
which shall include the physical, mental, spiritual, social, indus-
trial and environmental conditions, with all other debtitating
influences."

It is also one of the aims to disseminate information in • national
magazine and to send out data for us, "especially among mothers
and teachers, for the detection and correction of those conditions in
childhood which tend to bring about • breakdown, mental or physical,
in later life." Others interested are George Gordon Battle, Margaret
Wilson, Austin Strong and William G. McAdoo. It is an experiment
that will be watched with interest by millions of nervous Americans.

The coming of the Fascia. movement to America for the avowed
purpose of controlling the radical element among the Italians in
America, and to check lawlessness, is not by any means an unmixed
benefit. In Italy the Fpcisti wiss brought into being because of the
ipbility of the government to function; and by reason of the fact
that Italy was in • stage of transition from war to peace and for a
