"The Menace" and Good Fellowship.

'tk.. We have had frequent occasion to refer recently in these

columns to "The Menace," that rabid anti-Catholic organ that
each week is issued in a little Missouri town. Two causes have
urged us to give notice to a publication which ordinarily because
of its vicious character, we would deem unworty of recognition.
In the first place, its constant onslaughts on the followers
of Roman Catholicism have been so full of venom and vindict-
iveness that as the sponsor of religious tolerance, we could not
well hold our silence. But more important even than this was
the fact that in recent times, there has been a scarcely veiled
effort on the part of "The Menace" to make it appear that in its
attitude, it was not only sympathetic to the Jews but that in
turn, they were in accord with its policies and purposes.
Nothing could be farther from the truth than this, for we
Jews well know that the enemy of one religion is likely to be
the foe of all religions. Moreover, as the defender—if it is not
the official organ of the Ku Klux Klan—we know that ''The
Menace" stands in opposition to the very principles which right-
minded Jews hold dear, and that it interprets its Americanism
in far different terms than we are accustomed to do.
The impertinence of "The Menace" has, however, reached
a climax in its publication of March 24 of what it calls "The
Jewish-Christian Good Fellowship" number and in which by
printing a number of articles in laudation of the Jew-articles
clipped from books and newspapers—it thinks to fool the mass-
es of the Jews into believing in its sincerity and friendship, and
incidentally, in adding great numbers of our people to its list
of subscribers.
Because we believe that there are sonic among the Jews
who do not know the whole history of "The Menace" and who
may be duped by the few sample copies that they have been
receiving, we deem it our duty to sound this word of warning
and to tell them that "The Menace" is a rabid, anti-Catholic
sheet; that it is a friend and a defender of the Ku Klux Klan;
and that therefore, despite all of its protestations of friendship
for the Jews, it is an enemy of the Jews and ought not to find
a place in any Jewish home.

The Jew Militant.

A booklet jus ublished by Dr. Louis I. Newman under the
title "A Jewish University in America" is dedicated "To the
Jew Militant who looks not Outward but Inward for the Muni-
tions of the Spirit."
The booklet of almost one hundred pages is based upon an
editorial published by Dr. Newman in October, 1922, under
the title "Is a Jewish University in America Desirable" and con-
tains besides the original editorial which is of considerable
length, a second essay in which the idea originally set forth by
the author is amplified. Besides, there is a symposium of opin-
ions by educators, editors and publicists, and a bibliography of
the Jewish question in American colleges.
One cannot render snap judgment upon a problem so vital
as that presented for consideration by Dr. Newman. There may
be something to hie. contention when he says: "From a group of
fine and creative Jewish personalities, there have come state-
ments of the affirmative cultural attitude of the new American
Jew which augur hopefully for our future here regardless of
the forces arrayed against us. Little by little a potent Jewish
public ouinion is certain of formation whereby we may frame
a vigorous "politik" to guide us in this unlooked for aspect of
renascent anti-Semitism."
And yet we cannot take kindly to the idea of the establish-
ment of a Jewish university in America. To be sure, Dr. New
man is very explicit in his assurance that the term "Jewish Uni-
versity" is something of a misnomer and that the institution he
has in mind is not to have an exclusively Jewish faculty, nor to
cater only to Jewish students, nor to teach only subjects with a
distinct Jewish bearing. The university as we understand it,

Dr. Weicm•nn Makes Vigor... Reply to British Anti-Zionist Publisher in
Keren Hayesod Campaign Speech; Special Cable from Dr.i
Magnes, Now in Palestine.

NEW YORK..—"Zionism and the
Jewish people are neither dead nor
dying. Tut-Ankh-Amen is dead. The
Pharaohs who opposed the Jews are
dead. And the Jews who have out-
lived so many distinguished enemies
will outlive Lord Beaverbrook also."
With these words, addressing a
meeting of 3,000 Jews of Jersey City,
who crowded to capacity the audi-
torium of Dickinson High School last
week, Dr. Chaim Weizmann, presi-
dent of the World Zionist Organiza-
tion, replied to the statement of Lord
Beaverbrook, publisher of the Lon-
don Daily Express, that Zionism was
dying. Lord Beaverbrook's state-
ment, which he had circulated wide-
ly and which appeared in the daily
press throughout the country, pur-
ported to be based on the observa-
tions of the publisher in Palestine.
The Jews of Jersey City turned out
en masse to greet the Zionist leader.
In the evening a banquet was held
at which $15,000 was raised towards
the quota of $50,000 set for the K e
ren Ilayesod in that city. This re-
ception to Dr. Weizmann was one of
a long series of similar functions
which have been held in various parts
of the city of Greater New York in
conjunction with the New York cam-
paign for the Keren Ilayesod now in
progress. Judge Bernard A. Rosen-
blatt, chairman of the campaign com-
mittee, reported that the $500,000
mark has already been passed, with
the results of the synagogue cam-
paign held during the week of Pass-
over not yet tabulated.
On the eve of the synagogue cam-
paign, Dr. J. L. Magnes, the well
known rabbi and communal leader
of New York, who is now in Pales-
tine, sent a cable to the headquarters
of the Keren Ilayesod, urging that
all Jews support the campaign. Dr.
Magnes has been in Palestine for a
number of months and has traveled
throughout the country, familiarizing
himself with the various aspects of

the work in progress. The text of
his cable is as follows:
"Have seen impressive results pro-
duced by Zionist funds: and pur-
chased , marshes drained splendid
pioneers established in farm co-oper-
atives, sick cared for, school system
maintained. This work collapsing
due to lack of funds. Urge prompt
co-operation of every one in your
campaign."
The meeting in Jersey City was
also addressed by United States Sen-
ator Edward I. Edwards of Jersey
City. Senator Edwards paid tribute
to Dr. Weizmann as the man Who
"is making it possible for the Jews
of Russia and Poland to settle in
their own country, Palestine."

LATVIAN ANTI-SEMITES
WANT JEWS BOYCOTTED

RIGA.—(J. T. A.)—A huge anti-
Semitic rally was held by the Latvian
National Club in the streets of Riga
at which speakers urged that an eco-
nomic boycott be started against the
Jews. Preceding the meeting auto-
mobiles filled with agitators rode
through hte streets distributing ap-
peals for the boycott.
Representatives of the Jewish com-
munity waited on the president and
the Minister of Interior asking that
steps be taken against the proposed
boycott. They were unsuccessful, how-
ever.

ANTI-SEMITE ARRESTED
FOR MONARCHIST PLOT

BERLIN.—(J. T. A.)—Arthur Din-
ter, author of the anti-Semitic book
"The Sin Against the Blood," and one'
of the leaders of the anti-Semitic Na-
tional Liberty Party, was arrested at
Graefenroda on the charge rig being
involved with Adolph Hitler, the Fan-
cisti leader, in the recent monarchist
conspiracy.

tion Committee and the inability of
the Keren Ilayesod to supply the hos-
pitals with the sums needed are the
causes of the crisis. The Hadassah
work has been one of the greatest ac-
complishments of the Zionist move-
ment since the war. The improvement
in the health conditions of Palestine,
the result of activities of this Amer-
ican Jewish organization, have help-
ed to revolutionize things in the Holy
Land and to cement friendship be-
tween the Arabs and the Jews. To
close the Hadassah hospitals at this
time would be criminal and to the dis-
credit of American Jews. It is really
unfortunate that the response to the
Keren Hayesod should not be great
enough to supply sufficient sums for
the support of the hospitals. But a
separate Hadassah fund is now being
asked for, and a sacred duty involves
on American Israel to keep up the
work of health and sanitation in Pal-
estine. Without the Iladassah, the
pioneers are not safe. The Chaluzim
must be assured that their health will
be protected during their struggle for
the rebuilding of the homeland. We
