innate modesty. He began his public
career by serving as estimator of the
17th ward of Detroit for two years
In 1913 he was elected alderman and
during the year 1914 was chosen by
his colleagues as president of the
common council for the city of De-
troit. From there he was appointed
to the office of corporation counsel,
where he served his city from May 1,
1915, to Jan. 1, 1918, when he took
his seat on the Wayne circuit bench.
In 1921 he became presiding judge of
Michigan, an office which he has held
with distinction until the present.

meeting of the club Monday after-
noon at Temple Beth El. Dr. Yarros'
subject will be "How to Teach Bio-
logical Facts to Children," and every
mother is urged to attend this lecture,
which is of especial interest to moth-
ers and teachers.

"The Star in the East," a Biblical
drama by Anne Jane Barnwell, will
be presented by the Y. W. II. A. dra-
matic class on Thursday evening,
March 8, in the small auditorium of
Temple Beth El. In addition to the
play, Rabbi Leo M. Franklin will
speak on the significance of Purim.
An excellent musical program is be-
ing arranged. The evening is open to
Y. W. II. A. members and Woman's
Club members ads their friends.

Miss Ida Lippma, of the Woman's
Police Division gave an interesting
talk at the Y. W. II. A. meeting on
Sunday afternoon at the Shaarey Ze-
dek. Miss Ann Morris, chairman of
the "Y" Council, presided at the busi-
ness part of the meeting, when re-
ports were heard from delegates of
various classes. After the meeting,
the members adjourned to the dining
room of the synagogue for games,
dancing and refreshments.
