Up to 1912 Saluniki was essentially
a Jewish community. Trade and
commerce were at a standstill on

Saluniki was then perhaps the most I
important and prosperous maritime

city of the Near East. The situa-
tion changed considerably in 1912
when Saluniki was annexed to Greece.
Many of the wealthy Jews could not
stand the Greek competition, and as
a result either the business houses
were ruined or they left the city. The
real distress of the Jews began in
the year 1917 when a disastrous fire
took place. Of the 45 Jewish institu-
tions only nine wer cleft. Fifty-two
thousand Jews were made homeless.
