Relief Remittance Day Is Set
Aside by American Relief
Committee.
A unique celebration, on Jan. 31,
of the seventy-fifth birthday of
Nathan Straus, "grand old man of
American Jewry," and one of the
foremost philanthropists of this coun-
try is being plannts1 by the Ameri-
can Jewish Relief Committee, in con-
junction with the chairmen of the
thousands of branches in all the
states of the Union.
The plan is to make the last day
of the month "Nathan Straus Re-
lief Remittance Day" and to mark it
wilth a record-breaking remittance of
fund for the benefit of war-sufferers
in Europe. Throughout the country,
state end local committees will begin
a vigorous campaign to collect all
the outstanding pledges made during
the recent $14,000,000 National Ap-
peal for war-sufferers regardless of
whether or not the pledges have al-
ready fallen due.
Mr. and Mrs. A. J. Bluomgarden
of 1630 Virginia park left Tuesday
for a several months' stay in Cali-
fornia. They will return home via
the Southern route, spending some
time in New Orleans before reaching

Committee's Statement.
In announcing the "Nathan Straus
Relief Remittance Day" the Ameri-
can Jewish Relief Committee made
this statement:
"Not only will this plan result in
the early remittance of un enormous
amount of money fur relief and re-
construction work among the thou-
sands of sufferers from the war and
its aftermatha, Isringing succor to
thousands of widows, orphans and
refugees, but it will constitute a form
of testimonial which will be especially
pleasing, to the man whose 'diamond
jubilee' will be honored. Nathan
Straus is one of the !mist romantic
figures in the field of philanthropy.
Without blazoning his intentions to
the world, he had given until he is
poor. Ile has not given merely front
his income, but he has actually parted
with a large part of his capital.
"His town house, his yacht, his
trotting stable are among the things
that he has given up to answer the
cry of the poor, and his gissil wife,
unwilling to be left behind its this
effort on behalf of suffering humanity,
has parted with her remarkable col-
lection of jewels.

WOMAN'S CLUB PRESENTS
WELL KNOWN ARTISTS
An unusually fine program is its
store for the members of the Jewish
Woman'a Club next month, when
Miss Marguerite Schuiling, mezzo-
soprano, and Ilya Schkolnik, violinist,
will appear. The meeting will be
held in the chapel of the new Temple
Beth-E1 at 3 'o'clock on Feb. 5.
Miss Schuiling, who is a native
of Michigan, having been born in
Grand Rapids, began her musical
career when the family moved to In-
dianapolis, where the peculiar timbre
of her very unusual lower tones at-
tracted the attention of a well known
instructor at the city conservatory.
He called hers a "hidden voice," but
wagered to uncover it within three
months. Ile was successful, and
everywhere his discovery was greeted
with applause. Since that time Miss
Schuiling has studied with Fronk La
Forge of New York, and is at present
in Detroit coaching, With Mr. Herman

Was First to Respond.
"Contributing liberally to many
humanitarian appeals, founder of the
pasteurized milk stations in New
York, supporter of feeding stations
for hundreds of poor in Palestine,
he was among the very first to re-
spond to the cry that came from Eu-
rope from the thousands of num,
women and children who were
stripped of all their belongings, and
left sick and starving as a conse-
quence of the war. His first contribu-
tion of $100,000 in 1917, followed by
others of the mime amount for sev-
eral successive years, showed how
completely he envisioned the great
problem, and at the same time taught
countless others in this country the
means by which they should measure
their own contributions. His was the
great inspiration that has, in large
measure, made possible the raising
in this country of the colossal sums
that have been raised in this coun-
try for war-relief during the past six
years, and the opportunity that his
seventy-fifth birthday offers will be
eagerly seized by thousands of Jews
throughout the United States to indi-
cate the affection and veneration in
which they hold him."
