The annual recital of piano music to
be given by Ossip Gabrilowitsch will
take place in Orchestra Hall on
Thursday evening, Feb. 1. Detroit
again is to be congratulated in hav-
ing as one of its citizens such a dis-
tinguished musician as Mr. Gabrilo-
witsch. Here in Detroit sometimes
his great success as a conductor
makes one forget that he is one of
the world's greatest pianists, but his
annual recital and his annual appear-
ance with the orchestra always serve
to bring this fact again to the fore-
ground. Mr. Gabrilowitach in the
weeks he is away from Detroit has
been kept very busy with his piano
work. He has appeared with several
orchestras and given numerous re-
citals with his wonted success. There
are few pianists who hold so secure
a place in the affections of the Amer-
ican public and this place has been
won by 20 years of honest, sincere
devotion to the great art which he
practices.
lie has arranged an exceedingly in-
teresting program for his recital
which runs from Bach through to
Beethoven, Chopin and Paderewski,
whose "Theme and Variations" he
will play, and he includes in the pro-
gram two pieces of his own. Mr.
Gabrilowitsch's modesty seems to
have impelled him so far to minimize
his very real accomplishments as a
composer and it will be good to hear
some of his own music.
