The guests of honor at tbis de- lightful affair were Miss Anna Solo- mon and Miss Fanny Simon, charter members of this society, who have been active on the executive board since its organization, Miss Solomon having served the society in various capacities since its inception. Both Miss Solomon and Miss Simon were recipients of beautiful gifts in recog- nition of service and untiring effort put forth in its behalf. Mrs. Henry Wineman, the retiring president, gave an exceptionally interesting resume of the workings of the society for the past year, showing its phenomenal growth in all phases. Miss Blanche Hart reported comprehensively the tremendous results accomplished at the camp of the Fresh Air Society and the hundreds of individuals housed during the heated term. Miss Hart told of the newly organized West End Community Clinic on Hol- brook avenue, where all the worthy needy may come for treatment. Dr. A. I.. Jacoby, city psyciatrist, gave a talk on the aims and true scope of psyciatry and its relation to the his- tory of crime and the work done in the criminal courts. B.I People in Austrian business life have of late begun to observe the growing importance of Palestine is their affairs. Native-horn Vienna Jews have always deprecated Zionism! and Jewishness generally. Only a handful among them have ever had any faith in the Zionist successes. They were sceptical even about the British and American reports of the , recognition of a el wish national home in Palestine. But business interests have sue- seeded in bringing about a change. The good Egyptian pounds which have been steadily confing in to the Vienna market from Palestine have convinced them that the talk about re- building Palestine does really mean something. They have proved to be more effective than all the internation- al documents and the government dec- larations. Palestinian Jews are buy- ing machinery, tools, raw materials, etc., in Austria, because owing to the present rate of exchange they are cheaper than elsewhere and also be- cause they are of excellent quality. Jewish business men in Vienna are now counting upon Palestine Jewry, and even in government circles it is being recognized that the Jews of Palestine are an important factor in the Austrian business world. Pales- tinian Jews are coming to be regarded with as much respect as the business men who came to Vienna from Eng- e land or Amercia. Business considera- 1 tions have prevailed where religious and race considerations failed. They I have proved stronger than ever the traditional distaste of the assimilia- tionist for Jewish nationalist ideals. The development of Palestine as a business center is doing more than anything else to secure recognition for Jewish nationalism. piece on ~ 1te Jenny) We ins for One Week Only Every pair of Physical Culture Shoes in the house at special and sub- stantial savings. The mayors of these places, and the older, more staid citizens, resent this younger militant anti-Semitism. They know that they are in the main depen- dent for their livlihoods on what they can make from visitors (luring the season, and yet they are helpless against the agitators, The "Deutsche Tageszeitung," Stin- nes' organ in Vienna, has now started a campaign that next summer the Jews should not be allowed to enter health resorts at all. It is "immoral" it contends, to allow the Jews to come in first, to take their money and then to drive them out. "Morality" de- mands constituency. "We won't have their money," it writes; "we won't let them come in at all." So we see that the German anti- Semities are beginning to draw logi- cal conclusions. They are beginning to be consisent and "moral," and Hea- ven knows to what summits of anti- Jewish "morality" they will yet as- cend, to hurl us down from them. Yet they complain they have suffer- ed a reverse. The peasantry in the Tyrol, saturated to the core with the Bible, have erected several monuments to the Biblical heroes. That is a lo- cal custom for centuries now. Just recently they have raised a new monu ment to David slaying Goliath. And the Vienna anti-Semites are enraged. They have started a campaign in their press against such an act on the part of a Christian community—the erec- tion of a monument to a "Jew boy" overthrowing the great Aryan hero of Goliath." This is the sort of thing we get to- day in practically the whole of the an- ti-Semitic press in Austria, and, of c ourse, the writers of most of the ar- ticles are the Iran-German professors in the high schools and the universi- ties or the "scientific" expounders of the "purity of the Germanic Race." This campaign is scheduled to start early in March. The meeting was for the purpose of organizing committees of business men representing all the lines of in- dustry under whose auspices the cam- paign is to he conducted. The meth- ods to he followed in the .campaign were outlined by Harris L. A recent development has been the movement against letting Jews take the rest cure at Austrian health resorts, and this time there is no distinction drawn be- tween the detested East European Jew and the native-horn Viennese Jew taking his holiday trip. The existence has been discovered of a special or- ganization run by the pan-German party, which circulates leaflets in the villages inciting to a boycott against the Jewish visitors.
