What Constitutes a Jewish Society?

A casual glance at practically any issue of the society col-
umns of the daily newspapers and much more, of the Jewish
publications, indicates the existence in this city of a variety
and multiplicity of so-called Jewish organizations of one sort
and another that is simply staggering. Fraternities and sorori-
ties parading under all sorts of fancy Greek and Hebrew letter
names, the purpose of whose existence human mind has as yet
been unable to fathom so-called charitable societies whose
charity seems to consist for the most part in giving dances for
the entertainment of their members; social clubs. athletic clubs,
card clubs; in fact, every sort of organization that can be con-
ceived of, because its membership happens to be made up ex-
clusively of Jews, calls itself a Jewish organization.
This is not as it should be. The only society that may legiti-
mately call itself Jewish is one that does some work for the up-
lift of Jewish life and the furtherance of Jewish ideals. An
organization may devote itself to the study of the history, the
literature, the philosophy of Jews, and by that token, legiti-
mately take the title Jewish. Another may undertake social
work in one or the other of its many phases and logically win
the right to a place among the Jewish philanthropic organiza-
tions. Indeed, societies may do a great variety of things which
tend to serve Jews and Judaism and they all—but they only—
have the right to be known as Jewish clubs or societies.
The indiscriminate use of our name by mere pleasure seek-
ing societies tends to bring us into disrepute. And the sooner
the practice is stopped, the better it will be for all concerned.
No one has a right to object to a group of young folks giving a
'dance either for their own entertainment or for any other legiti-
mate purpose. But to do this and nothing more is not a warrant
for the use of our religious name. In saying this, we have ab-

Where Sir Hippo lay flat on his aide,
A mountain of pinkish gray meat,
A rare royal treat,
'Neath his leathery hide,
Though perhaps just a trifle bit tough.

A Midrash leaped quick to my mind,
And I said to my friend: "Fate's unkind;
If we had a sharp knife, we might carve
A slice from Levyosan below
In the Olam Ha-Zeh, and not starve
For our share in the Olam Ha-Boh."

As we laughed at the notion
Of Hippo-Levyosan,
A white-bearded Jew, very fromm,
Turned round with a wink,
And he chuckled, I think,
As he spoke with a Nigen'a quaint hum:

Please grant at your banquet my plea:
I dote on your Yiddish,
So when you make Kiddish,
Kind hosts, won't you please invite me?"

paign against this movement, the
stronger it seems to grow. The most
striking attack on this masked organ-
ization was made last Sunday by
Samuel Untermyer, in an address in
Ilartford, Conn., at a banquet on the I
occasion of the launching of a drive
for the Keren Hayesod. Mr. Unter-
myer called the Klan "a strange andl
mediaeval eruption on our civic life"
and denounced it as "the most revolt-
ing blot on the fair escutcheon of our
beloved country." In his characteris-
tic manner, Mr. Untermyer called the
movement "illegal, cowardly, un-Am-
erican," and challenged the charges
of the imperial Wizard of the Ku
Klux Klan that the Jews added noth-
ing to the sum of human welfare and
that they were not a productive peo-
ple. Untermyer pointed to Palestine
as the "final and complete refutation
of this charge of unproductivity
against the Jewish people and the best
evidence for their positive genius for
constructive, productive accomplish-
ment." It is to be hoped that the Jew-
ish answer will be decisive and as
practical as Mr Untermyer advocates
it.
