A Great Christmas Store
On Sunday morning of this week
the sermon will be preached by Rabbi
Henry J. Berkowitz on the subject,
"A Day Before Christmas." This will
I be Rabbi Berkowitz's first sermon in
I the new temple. Ile will undoubtedly
have a vital message to bring to our
people and one that should be heard
by a large congregation.
Sabbath services will begin asusual
this week at 10:30, the sermon being
preached by Rabbi Franklin. Let us
make a great effort to fill the chapel
on Saturday morning. A particular
appeal in this regard is made to the
women of Beth El for co-operation
in this matter.

Professor Slonimsky's
Second Lecture:
ple to a different Cause.
And before I leave this subject I challenge the statement of the
publisher of the Shepherd of Israel that "The Shepherd of Israel is
b e ing received each month by thousands of prominent Jews in Amer-
;a ." This is another example of the questionable methods used by
these professional "converters." If you have thousands of names of
prominent Jews, give us their names! if you have hundreds, give on
their names; I challenge you to name a score; yes, I go further sad
challenge you to name 10 prominent Jews in this country who sub.
scribe for your magazine—except for such a purpose as I, myself, read
using loose language, my Hebrew
it—to check you up, You are
•
Christian brother, very loose language; and if that is the way you are
teaching the poor benighted Jew the lesson of Christian righteous-
nen and truth—well, the first thing we know you will have the enemies
of the Jews accusing us of corrupting Christianity.
On Friday evening of this week,
Dec. 22, l'rofessor henry Slonimsky
of the Ilebrew Union College will
give his second lecture on "An Out-
line of the l'hilosophy of Religion
Popularly Presented." Those who
had the privilege of hearing the open-
ing address in this series were greatly
inspired by the professor's presents.
fiat.. Ile treats a difficult subject in
a highly interesting and popular style.
The address is followed by a "ques-
tion and answer" period which adds
to the interest and popularity of the
course. It is hoped that the profes-
sor will be greeted this week by a
very large audience.
The Nation publishes this week the translation of the second mani-
festo issued by the Jewish National Council of Palestine to the Arabs.
It is a very interesting document and makes an appeal to the Arebs to
remove from their minds the thoughts of attempted Jewish domination
and the idea that the Jews intend to exploit the Arabs. Here is the
style:
"We, all the members of the Jewish nationality dwelling
you in our country, come to you, our Arabic brethren,
with a message of peace and love, of unity and joint labors, to
lay before you the sincerity of our aims and the purity of our
hopes. You must know that our Bible and the writings of the
Prophets admonish us never to transgress the laws of justice
and fairness. Ere yet our feet had trod this holy land, we had
engraved deep in our hearts that we were coming to reinhabit
the sandy shores and the deserts of the land; to fructify the
mountains and the valleys; to bring to light the treasures em-
bedded deep in the strata; to elevate the waters falling at pres-
ent to waste and creating swamps which bring sickness on the
dwellers of low-lying parts; to conquer by toil and sweat, by
money and science that which the inhabitants of the land were
previously to exploit through lack of means; to bring a sheaf
of blessing on all toilers of the land; and above everything not
to encroach on anybody's rights or privileges."

Dancing CI
The newly organized dancing
classes for the children of Beth El
will regularly start their work Sat-
urday afternoon of this week, Dec.
23, at 2 o'clock. Instruction will be
given in both ballroom dancing and
in aesthetic dancing. As the head
of this department, we have been
very fortunate in securing Mrs. Carl
Mann of the Detroit Conservatory of
Music, a dancing teacher or recog-
nized ability. As the enrollment in
these classes has been unexpectedly
large, no further enrollments will be
made for the present term after the
coming Saturday. The classes in
ballroom dancing will begin at exact-
ly 2 o'clock and the classes in are.
Oldie dancing at 3 o'clock. Each
of the classes will last one hour. Ar-
rangements have been made by which
either of these courses of 10 lessons
each may be had for the nominal cost
of $7.50, which is invariably paid in
advance. Checks should be made pay-
able to the Dancing School Commit-
tee of Temple Beth El.
This sounds almost like • passage from Shakespeare:
"For one small moment place your hand on your heart,
and with reverent feeling ask your very soul if ever indeed a
Jew had desecrated what you hold sacred. They terrify you
with an alleged peril from the ilalutzim (pioneers). Go and
investigate whom these workmen harm. Do they not buy all
their needs from the local inhabitants and pay with choice
Jewish money, flooding the country from abroad? Who are
the buyers of the toil of the fellah and fisherman at the prin-
cipal markets in Jaffa, Jerusalem and other cities Is this then
the way we exploit the natives? Or is it then that a Jew buys
and does not pay or that a Jew borrows and does not settle?"
That epression, "choice Jewish money," I trust is an unhappy
translation rather than deliberately chosen.
Well, if Rosa Schwimmer, on the Peace Ship, didn't make a fool
of Henry Ford, then somebody else did. Then again, maybe Henry
already had • good start and no one had to overwork to make him the
complete fool he proved himself to be in the Protocol fakes. Mark
Sullivan, who used to be with Collier's Weekly, says that after figur-
ing it out, he thinks that Ford, presidentially speaking, will get more
votes because of his anti-Jewish campaign than otherwise. In other
words, his loss from lack of Jewish votes will be overcome by the Ku
Klux KI nnnnn s and others. We shall see, Mark, we shall see. What
odds do Lloyds of London want to give that Henry Ford will ever be
President of the United States?
Now that the Sisterhoods of the Reform congregations of the coun-
try have raised money for • dormitory at the Hebrew Union College—
to cost some two or three hundred thousand dollars—why shouldn't
the "brotherhoods" begin to prove their reason for existing?
Those Jews who are directly or indirectly responsible for the pro-
duction of "The Birth of • Nation, 6 the moving picture that has to

could he put over on the most advanced white civilized society. That's
why we have the Red Riders of the Royal Robe, the Ku Klux Klan, the
