I would have told them what to do.
I would have told them to drive the
Jews out (it wouldn't have been the
first time or by any means the last ,
time) 24 hours before the trial, and
then say that the Jews are Christ
killers. Why did the Duke of Venice
hesitate to do that?
"Shakespeare has Shylock say of
Portia: 'A Daniel, a veritable Daniel,
has come to judgment.' Where did
Shylock the Jew get this? It isn't
found in the Bible but in the hypo-
critical hooks of the Christians. So
how could a Jew of that century say
that?
Calls Portia Foolish.
"Portia is not wise but foolish.
She says to Shylock that he may
: take one pound of flesh, no more, no
less, and without a drop of blood.
Why not less? If he wants to be so
good as to take less, why not let him?
And without a drop of blood. It
would be the same as buying lemons
from a storekeeper but forbidden to
take the juice from them.
"I think I know Jewish expres.
along and literature, but I have never
beard of such Jewish oaths as Shy.
lock swears by, 'The Staff of Jacob '
or 'By the Holy Sabbath.' And such
Jewish names, as Shylock, Tubel or
Jessica?
"Jessica is the most dispicable
character of the whole play. Lorenzo
is a robber. Bassani° only wanted
Portia's ducats. Bassanio's friend s
are parasites. Antonio is • gambler.
Gobbo Launcelot, Shylock's Christian
servant, is the only redeeming char-
acter of the play. He relieves the
monotony by his humorous sayings
and is the only one who has a con-
science.
"When I was younger I thought
the play could be changed. Some say
that when Shylock was refused his
pound of flesh he should have let
them have their flesh and money and
go home and commit suicide. But
no, when he raises his hand to take
the pound of flesh he should cut three
pounds and then commit suicide. But
now I see the play is a travesty. It
is not good from beginning to end.
When the play first was produced it
was supposed to be a comedy. Now
it is a tragedy. It should have re-
mained a comedy, for that's what
it is.
"Belasco degrades the Jewish race
and Warfield and others do an injus-
tice to the Jew in playing the role.
