Digesting the Week's News

(Concluded from Editorial page.)
make a statement such as we quote.
Regardless of expense, the American
committee deserves the admiration
and esteem of all thinking men who
have followed reports of the work ac-
complished. True, only a fraction of
what should have been done has so far
been accomplished. Yet, the credit for
the collection of the tremendous sum
of $50,000,000 for relief goes only to
the Jewish part of the American popu-
lation. It has not been equalled 'by
any other element. And if the expen-
ses were big, it was no because the
American Jewish Relief Committee
has served not only as a medium for
distributing aid, but also as an edu-
cational and propaganda committee to
educate American Jews to the needs
abroad. It is almost certain that if it
had not been for the propaganda work
of the American committee, much less
would have been accomplished. The
expense was therfore warranted. We
would advise the gentleman of the
B'nai B'rith to think twice before he
speaks once, before again criticising
reputable Jewish institutions.

Strike Against Jewish Professor.

Aryan and non-Aryan students on
the campus Of the German University
at Prague are clashing over the re-
tention of Professor Steinherz, a Jew,
as the university head. Reactionary
students are on strike against the
Jewish university president, and fights
break out whenever and wherever
they encounter with the 600 non-strik-
ing Jews and students of other denom-
inations siding with the Jewish pro-
test against the strike. Reports from
European universities reveal a sad
state of affairs for our fellow Jews,
and the establishment of a Hebrew
University at Jerusalem must certain-
ly he sweet news for these unfortunate
students.

We Are Jealous.

The Catholic Bishop who came to
thank his Jewish fellow citizens for
the assistance they gave the Irish and
the contributions they made towards
making Ireland a free state aroused
jealousies within us. As a liberty lov-
in people we are ready and at all times
anxious to be of assistance to every
other oppressed people seeking its in-
dependence and freedom. But that
does not excuse Jews from giving for
the liberation of every other people
but forgetting their own. If Jews
give for the Irish Republic, we have a
right to expect they will give and
work for making Palestine the nation-
al homeland of the Jewish people. And
if these Jews give for Ireland but fail
to give for Palestine, we are jealous.
And we are deeply hurt, Gan. It is not
fair. It is wrong. It is an injustice.

The Communist named Kaz who was deported last year following the
Jaffa riot, at the head of a group of Communists whom the government
held responsible for the demonstration ending in the riot, has been expelled
from Palestine following his return about a month ago under another name.
Ile was kept in prison for 20 days prior to his deportation.

Rabbi Chaim Nahoum, former Turkish Ilahm Baschi, a conspicuous
adherent of the Turkish Nationalists, has arrived in London and is under-

rabbis, the drive having been organized on the ground that no more than
half of the population of San Francisco are members of any church.

Seven men and three women have been wounded in Beirut in a fight
between a Moslem procession and French soldiers. The conflict was caused
by a demonstration in favor of the Kemalist government and the carrying
of Kemalist flags. Colonel Fund Bey was also hurt. Fighting was reported
from a number of villages. The Director of Finances in French Syria was

tions in Vienna. The anti-Semitic deputies have introduced a bill in the
Hungarian Parliament demanding the surrender of Paul Sandor. to be tried

Legal action has been commenced in Budapest by the officers of the
Awakening Magyars against Dr. Julius Bardossy, former secretary of this
organization, who, after he resigned from office, accused the leaders in
public prints of misappropriating funds belonging to the organization.

mentary proof, the Magyar leaders indignantly repudiated his assertion
and the trial which has just commenced is arousing much interest.

Because the return of the Turk to Palestine would lead to the establish-
ment of an Arabic Palestine, the Arabs wish the Turkish nationalists would
gain control of the Holy Land, according to the Beth El Mekdas, a leading
Arabic daily in Jerusalem. This opinion has been expressed by other
Arabic newspapers, but never with such candor. The Arab representatives
have withdrawn from the Jaffa Chamber of Commerce, establishing a sepa-
rate chamber. This move is due to the alleged predominance of Jews in
the chamber.

The London Jewish Chronicle reports that Hamid Bey, one of Kemal's
representatives in Constantinople, has confidentially requested the Chief
Rabbinate of Turkey to organize meetings in favor of transferring the
l'alestie mandate to Turkey. The Rabbniate replied that it holds aloof
from politics. It has, however, further reports say, been requested to send
n delegation representing Turkish Jewry to Lausanne. It appears that the
Turks are in close touch with the Palestine Arabs and are inciting them to
revolt against British rule, the Jewish Chronicle states.

The Jewish Commissariat has consented to the reopening in Moscow
of the Kehillah Relief Committee, popularly called "Mekepo," on condition
that it concentrate its efforts along local relief work only and leave emi-
gration alone. Another condition is that a Communist "observer" be added
as a member of the executive committee to take care that the orders are
complied with. The "Mekepo" is a politically independent organization and
tr needs no foreign support. It is significant that it was the Jewish Commis-
sariat that asked the government to grant such permits to Kehillah corn-
mittees in other cities throughout

Even the extreme Zionist never point-
ed to Palestine as an end in itself,
but as a means to a greater end. It
is again the universalism of the Jew.
"What about Judaism as a faith?
Many of our Jewish college graduates
say, why not a universal faith? But
a universal faith is merely a dream.
There is no universal religion, be-
cause we are all thrown into natural-
ly formed groups. Thus it is easy to
be kind to the Negro race as a whole
and to dislike the individual Negro.
"But if non-Jews dislike loyal Jews,
they dislike the disloyal Jew much
more profoundy and keenly. We
have as an example the great admira-
tion that was shown by non-Jewish
bankers to Jacob Schiff's loyalty to
his people and faith."

Loyalty to Judaism.

"Loyalty to Judaism came in its
finest form when I was in Europe,"
Dr. Kress declared. "When I saw
Jews in Europe suffering and in spite
of all crying out that God will help,
that God sleepeth not nor slumbers.
So I feel that our people in crises
have maintained their loyalty. But
why must persecution make us cry
out our confession? It is well that
we grasp our opportunity while we
enjoy our liberties."
After congratulating the Men's
Club and Rabbi Leo M. Franklin for
"spreading out their tents" and on
the dedication of the new building,
Rabbi Kress urged the Men's Club to
be loyal to the temple and the rabbis,
and through this loyalty evince their
loyalty to Israel.
Rabbi Franklin, in introducing Dr.
Krass, said that for a number of
years the latter had been a sort of
wandering Jew, making his voice
heard in the great cause of Jewish
relief, appealing to the Jewish heart
and Jewish consciousness.
Melville S. Welt, president of the
Men's Club, said in opening the meet-
ing: "Tonight is our night. We have
wandered for three years, but at last
we have been given a home, a per-
manent home. We hope to prove
worthy and a credit to the mother
organization and to the community
at large. Our ambition is that our
clubrooms and our club will be an
avenue hrough which members will
learn to know each other better."

Friday Services.

Mr. Welt announced that the rooms
will be open every evening, and
periodicals and games are made avail-
able. Ile also announced that Pro-
fessor Slonimsky of the Hebrew
Union College will inaugurate the
Friday evening lectures on Dec. 8.
On Friday, Dec. 1, Rabbi Franklin
will start a series of lectures on
"Literary Study of the Bible," and
will lecture on alternate fidays. On
Dec. 10, Professor M. Wesley of the
University of Micb!gan will address
a smoker of the•*den's Club.
Rabbi Berko'xitz urged the mem-
bers of the club to attend the Slonim-
sky lectures as well as those of Rabbi
Franklin. lie also urged the mem-
bers to assist in the work of the Tem-
ple/ Arts Society, the first presents-
tio of whose plays is to be on Tues-
da night.
Miss Helen Morris, duaghter of
Mr. and Mrs. Barney G. Morris, who
have just retturned from Europe),
played two piano selections that were
received with enthusiasm by the
members.

The position of the Kemalist government regarding Mesopotamia, Pales-
tine, Arabia and Syria was defined by Asas Bey. the Moscow plenipotentiary
of the Angora government, in an interview with the Moscow correspondent
of the Observer. The frontiers of Mesopotamia have still to be settled
and must be part of the treaty to be concluded at Lausanne, Asia Bey is
reported to have declared, while Palestine and Arabia, lying to the south
of Syria, have been declared outside Turkey by the agreement with France
defining the southern frontiers. The position of Mecca and Medina, as the
sites of Mohammedan holy places, must be arranged at this conference,
Asis Bey asserted.
