The divorce question occupied the
attention of the members at the meet-
ing of the Phllomathis Debating Club
last Sunday. The debate was on the
issue "Resolved, that restrictive leg-
islation as regards the divorce law be
enacted." The affirmative team, com-
posed of Jack F. Schulman and Isa-
dore Berger, was out-witted by the
negative debaters, Meyer Weisenfeldt
and Abraham C. Perlman, the latter
pair receiving the decision by a 14
to 10 vote. The negative was accord-
ed further honors by the election of
A. C. Perlman as best speaker. Fred
M. Butzel was the critic of the de-
bate and speaker of the evening. His
talk on divorce legislation completed
the program.
Another good program is promised

the movies were a factor in detract-

compared the modern novel, which
deals with problems of the day, with
the book of yesterday. In giving a
delightful interpretation of books in
general, she Raid that good books
have a good influence over one and
that one should feed the soul with
a reading of them, as it gives an in-
sight into other people's lives and
therefore a broader viewpoint and
oultook on the world in general. A
unique innovation in the way of en-
tertainment was the correct dress re-

that young women could be well
dressed, even on a limited income.
Mrs. Sadie C. Jacobs, head of the

)
Altogether one of the most delight-
ful and interesting functions ever
given by the Sisterhood of Temple
Beth El was the luncheon on Monday
last in the dining room of the new
Temple, when several hundred mem-
bers availed themselves of the oppor-
tunity of attending this opening af-
fair of the season. The speaker of
the day, Mrs. Frank Rosenblatt, edu-
cational director of the First Na-
tional Bank of Detroit, charmed her
hearers with a concise talk on a topic
that should be of special interest,
particularly to women, "The Uses
and Abuses of the Net Income." In
summing up her ideas as to the ways
and means of expending said incomes,
Mrs. Rosenblatt stressed the all-im-
portant factor that is so essential in
every regulated household, that of
not exceeding the income, and advo-
cated the use of a budget in the home
for at least six months in order to
get telling results. Mrs. Rosenblatt
said that women should learn the lan-
guage of men in a business way and
that discussion of the net income
should be a general topic in every
home, thereby avoiding many finan-
cial pitfalls. The tables were cen-
tered with baskets of yellow bebe
mums and white daisies and were
presided over by the executive board
and hospitality committee of the Sis-
terhood. Among those acting as hos-
tesses of the day were Mrs. Walter
lleavenrich, Mrs. Moe Weil, Mrs. Al-
fred Rothschild, Mrs. Rosa T. Rosen-
field, Mrs. Adoplh Sloman, Mrs. Jo-
seph Lichtenstein and Mrs. Edward
Frank.

GIFT SUGGESTIONS
of the Unusual Sort
Particular thought was given to
the selection of gift articles when our
buyers selected the merchandise for
this store a few months ago, with
the result that our entire main floor
is filled with gift articles of most un-
usual character, many of which are
to be seen only at this store.
Already this gift floor has attract-
ed wide interest, and the recipient
of ■ gift selected here will take add-
1
ed pleasure in the knowledge that it
came from the House of Birch.
The grouping illustrated above
was sketched on our floors. The
chairs are covered in rich Italian red
velvet, the frames being exquisitely
carved. They are priced $85.00 each.
The Console Table and Mirror are
perfectly proportioned and richly
carved. Table and Mirror are priced
$125.00.
Countless inexpensive gifts await you r inspection.
