Isn't is just about time that some one somewhere put • stop to the
use of the mails for lies that promote religious hatred? If there isn't
• law to stop it one should be passed. Some one Bent me that old
threadbare lie of the forged Knights of Columbus oath, a miserable
c ontemptible. It represents what purports to be the oath taken by
Catholics when they join the K. of C. It is so outrageous that it is
laughable. Only an insane person could possibly believe such trivet.
It is surprising that even in the state of Missouri there are men in
their right sense so lost to all sense of decency •s to stoop to such low

levels.

A representative musical critic inof
has this to say of Billy Sunday's famous— I was almost going to say
"coal h e avers"—Rodeheavers, the singing boys in his commercialized
e vangelistic circus. The critic is writing about some songs that the
famous Homer and his brother have just published, and among other

things he says:

"And then follows the worst line of tripe that has come this
way in years from these upright and righteous publishers. Here
are some of the titles, read 'em and weep: 'I'll Carry Mother's
Bible; 'The Gate Ajar,' The Sinless City.' You can't sidestep
Homer and his religious zeal because he has a highly specialized
and commercialized form of religion. The Rodeheaver produc.
tions are so vulgar they are funny. Rodeheaver is of the same
kidney as B. Sunday and there he belongs."

Rather strong talk that. But then after all the worst commentary
on the common sense of the American people was in the hysterical re-
ception given Billy Sunday and Rodeheaver. Talk about Main Street!
The big cities didn't have • thing on Gopher Prairie. One is amazed
that men and women, self respecting, high-minded, religious-minded
iion and women could have lent themselves to such • sensational and
as indulged in by this former baseball player.

It was • hysteria that held the possibilities of menace to the peace

to an accident that he is • Jew and that he doesn't want to be addition.
ally handicapped in his career by the hatred and fanaticism that is
• anted upon Jews. I am sorry for Mr. Feldman, but I assure him that
the Jews don't want to recognize him any more than he wants to be
recognized as a Jew. When • man of that sort leaves the Jewish fold
the air is cleaner. The Jew who is worse than this Feldman is the one
who bleongs to a Jewish community and who wants all that he can get
out of the community, but refuses to accept any responsibility as a
member of that community.

Heywood Braun in the New York Times has this paragraph:

"Our contemporary, The Call (Socialist paper), directs at-
tention to a letter sent to voters in the interests of a judicial
candidate by his honor John F. nylon, written in Yiddish,
signed by the Mayor (adds the Call) but not in Yiddish. Says
the Times: 'Three years ago, observes our Socialist friend,
Socialist speakers who spoke in Yiddish were arrested but we
are getting on.' It is a pleasure to find the Mayor learning a
language even if it isn't that of the majority."

In the recent issue of the Hebrew Standard, of New York, sp•
peered a letter from its English correspondent containing • very
startling statement that the Zionist Review is complaining bitterly
about the regulations which are keeping Jews out of Palestine. There
seems and h it all to be a feeling that certain influences are at
work to keep the Jewish immigration to Palestine to the lowest pos-
sible minimum. As an evidence of the truth of its statement, it is
reported that less than 350 Jews entered Palestine in the month of
July, and of this number almost 250 were the wives and children of
those already residing in the country. This is surely • strange situa•
tion, though it is a question whether the High Commissioner should be
so quickly blamed for it.

In an interview in the Washington Post the other day Simon
Wolf, who just celebrated his eighty-sixth birthday, said

"Never have I envied any man his wealth or his station in
life. Always I have gotten the greatest pleasures out of life by
making other people happy. To my mind thre can be not better
thing said of a man than that he has contributed in some meas-
ure to the joy of others."

There we have the philosophy of successful living summed up. Mr.
Wolf has given his life for his fellow Jews. A Catholic priest in Wash-
ington said:

of

"Simon Wolf, the Jew, is the best Christian in the District
Columbia."

In answer to my numerous critics I quote the Governor of Maine
on the Ku Klux Klan, which I wish to add is merely one of the
thousands of similar statements that are now filling columns of the
daily press of the country; there is • definite change in sentiment
toward the Klan. Here is what the G says.

"It seeks to array class against class, sect against sect, re-
ligion against religion. Such an organization nufst not and
never will get a foothold in this state. Secrecy is dangerous
and those who practice it seek to escape legal and personal
responsibility for their actions. I believe the Maine people pre-
fer the light of day to deeds of darkness, and they will never
allow any secret ordre to take the law into tis own hands, for
our courts have the respect of all good citizens."

I think that covers the case very nicely, Governor, thank you!

Postively, Mr. Sheen. John
Is is possible, Mr. Gallagher?
Jacob Astor is taking forty million dollare of his wealth to England.
Was the money made in America, Mr. Gallagher? Absolutely Mr.
Sheen. Is John J. Astor a profiteering Jew, who like all those "fur-
riness" who come to this country cash in and go back home to spend
their money? No, Mr. Astor is not a Jew, and, of course, that is
nick a disappointment to the Saturday Evening Post, the Dearborn
Independent and President Lowell, of H d. Wouldn't it Ism been
wonderful news heading: "JEW MAKES FORTY MILLIONS IN
AMERICA ND GIVES UP CITIZENSHIP." How the "antis" would
hove yapped. The Aston were traders, too, and maybe, who knows,
do you think possible, Mr. Gallagher, that they may try to make Mr.
Astor yet a Jew? You bet your sweet life they will, Mr. Sheen.

A friend sends me the "Golden Rule Magazine." There is an article
l' ■ ot amuses as well as interests me. Its title is, "Why Jews Succeed."
I ,m sure that the author is • well intentioned man, but before he
sp. cads such inaccuracies on paper for public reading he should ac-
q, 4int himself with facts. Here is one of the reasons why Jews sue-
∎ •d. I haven't room to give all. Mr. T. Harper Knowlson, the author,

VG:

"Primarily the possession of money is a sign of the favor of
Jehovah. To obtain wealth is thus a kind of sacred duty. The
Jew has no sympathy with the New Testament where it says:
'Lay not up for yourselves treasure on earth where moth and
rust doth corrupt.' Treasure on earth (to the Jew) is a symbol
of Divine favor. Abraham's servant accurately phrased the Jew
idea: 'The Lord bath blessed my master greatly: and He bath
given him flocks and herds and silver and godl and men servants
and camels and asses.' They mean Jehovah's smile. No wonder
the atheistic Jew is often anti-capitalistic."

So Mr. Knowlson continues:

"It is important that the Jewish view of wealth should be
borne in mind when dealing with the subject of this article.
instead of thinking of the Jew as a man out for dollars anyhow,
anytime and all the time, we must think of him as a man who
seeks dollars because it is consonant with his religion. It is no
part of my function to anayize the idea and to value it. All I
aim at just now is to understand religion—well, it is generally
successful."

Well, we are never too old to learn. I am quite sure that our
Golden Rule Editor thought that he had discovered something wonder-
ful.
But it's only funny. Take the President's Proclamation for
fhanksgi•ing; take any state paper that is addressed to the public
on New Year's for example. What does it usually contain? Just what
Abraham's servant is reported to have said only in different words.
Instead of saying, "The Lord bath blessed my master greatly" and
then enumerating what he po ed, the President or the Governor
or the Mayor says: "The Lord bath blessed this nation with big crops,
big business, prosperity is overflowing, etc., etc." Does that mean,
71 dear Mr. Knowlson that the citizenship of this country feels • relig-
ious obligation to make money and to grow big crops sod to do big
business? You can see for yourself how absurd your theory is.

I will tell you that your theory is pure nonsense and the only pur-
pose it serves is to give readers of your magazine • wrong impression
of the Jew and to increase the wide-spread erroneous impression that
every Jew must make money as • sign of favor with God. It's too bad.
n Arab once said, "H• who knows not and knows that he knows not
is wise, but ha who knows not and knows not that he knows not is •
fool." Really, Mr. Keowlson, I am out of patience with you.
