League of United Hebrew
Schools Formed at Meeting;
Will Boost Education

The Ladies' League of United He-
brew Schools of Detroit formally en-
tered the ranks of Hebrew education
at a massmeeting held on Wednes-
day afternoon, Nov. I, at the Shaarey
Zedek synagogue. Attended by more
than 200 ladies, the undertaking for
the formation of a league of women
to work for the cause of Jewish edu-
cation in Detroit is declared a suc-
cess.
The principal speakers of the af-
ternoon were Rabbi A. M. Hersh-
' man and Fred M. Butzel. Mrs. Wolf
Kaplan, president of the League,
who presided, declared in her open-
ing remarks that the goal of the
organization was to enlist in its ranks
a membership of 3,000 which is to
help the youth in the building and
!equipment of the Talmud Torahs in
Detroit.
Mr. Butzel, in his address, pointed
' out that the Jew in Poland, who dies
while protecting the Sefer Torah,
knows a reason for his sacrifice, but
the Jew in America, when excluded
from hotels, does not know where-
fore that is. Education was offered
as a solution.
Rabbi Hershman referred to those
who boast of being "proud of their
nation," and declared that the ques-
tion was whether the nation could be
proud of them.
Bernard Isaacs, superintendent of
the United Hebrew Schools, also
spoke. Miss Jeanette Jacobs gave
a piano selection, and vocal selec-
tions were given by Mrs. Sidney Al-
len. Bessie Riske, a pupil of the
local schools, recited a poem by

The league decided to have three
general meetings a year and regular

branches will have local meetings
and local officers, but will however
