tive portion of the building. In the
four stories of this section one is in
contact with modernity serving the
ancient cause of faith. For in this
section there is a beautiful audi-
torium, capable of seating 700 people,
an auditorium which can be used for
lectures, and which can also be
adapted by the employment of a port-
able Ark, for services at smaller re-
ligious gatherings. This auditorium is
also fitted with acoustic-felt lining on
the walls.
The basement one finds a great
dining hall capable of seating 800
people, and a complete kitchen ar-
rangement. The institutional sec-
tion includes the gymnasium and
the shower baths and other conven-
iences. There are many small meet-
ing rooms, and on the fourth floor
the studies for Rabbi Leo M. Frank-
lin and Rabbi Henry J. Berkowitz;
the board room, and other official
uarters.

School of Religion.

Two-and-one-half floors in this
portion of the building are occu-
pied by the offices and the 28 class
rooms of the Temple Beth El School
of Religion. This is planned as an
actual school, with classes graded
from the kindergarten up to the
adult groups, the classes all in
charge of trained teachers. A com-
plete library of 8,000 volumes for
the general use of the school, are
included as part of the equipment.
The rooms are all fitted with sound-
proof doors, each has a built-in black-
board, and the class-room chairs with
arm-rests are on late college models.
One group of these rooms is so ar-
ranged that three of them can be
thrown into one as a supplemental
auditorium. The class-rooms, when
not in use by classes, can be used
for many purposes. There are sev-
eral rooms for the women's organiza-
tions, including one sewing room
with a kitchenette on the same floor.
The upper floors can be reached by
an automatic elevator, and the Tem-
ple has freight elevator service.
All the societies affiliated with the
Temple, and there are many of these,
are planning new activities with the
opening of the new home of the Con-
gregation.
But with all these many social,
philanthropic, educational and cul
tural activities, Temple Beth El re-
mains a temple. The visitor at the
opening will see first and remember
longest the vast sanctuary interior,
with the grand silver lamp, the per-
petual light, burning forever above
the Ark, a memorial of Louis Blitz.
To build a Temple was the first
aim of the Temple board, the rabbis
and the congregation, and the archi-
tect, Albert Kahn. And with all the
modernity expressed in steel con-
struction and a system of interior tele-
phones, the boild'ne is fi-et
the shrMe of ancient faith—Temple
