NEW YORK.—(J. C. 11.)—Italian
clothing workers will aid the cam-
paign to raise $500,000 for the He-
brew Immigrant Aid Society, the Ile-
brew Trade Unions Conference an-
nounced. The question of the parti-
cipation of the Italian workers in the
Jewish money raising campaign arose
out of the decision of the Jewish work-
ers to devote their overtime to the
fund. Overtime by part of the em-
ployees not being permitted in union
shops, the Italian workers volunteered
to join their fellow-workers not only
in working overtime, but to contribute
to the fund the money earned during
overtime.

ALL TOO SOON
By RABBI JOSEPH EISENMAN
There are two different periods when the Jew is
brought to the judgment of the Lord. One is that of every
day and every second, as in the words of the Talmud,
"lirgoim tivuchonenu." The other period is that of Rosh
ha-Shanah and Yom Kippur. The difference between
these two periods is very great. In the first period man is
brought before the judgment of the Almighty and tried
for his personal sins and crimes which he commits by his
own actions. But on Rosh ha-Shanah and Yom Kippur he
is brought to trial collectively, with the whole community
of the Jewish race, and tried for all and with all.
It may be that in one's personal, every-day life his
actions were entirely harmless. He did no wrong to his
fellowmen. lie led a quiet and respectable life. So far,
so good. But Rosh ha-Shanah reminds us of something
more vital and important to society as a whole. The peo-
ple of Israel are brought before the Lord for judgment,
and each one of us has to report what he or she have done
for their nation, whether one has kept his promise to his
people, as I suppose he has done to his wife and children.
Though one may be a very fine man as far as his own
affairs are concerned, but—and the "but" is important to
remember—to his people he is spiritually a dead member.
And, therefore, when we pray to the Lord for our life and
general welfare, we must remember these words: "Melech
Chofetz ba-chaim," namely, that the kind of life the Lord
desires is a life for ourselves and for others.
Rosh ha-Shanah precedes Yom Kippur for the reason
that this is the day when every one ought to meet his obli-
gations towards his fellowmen and his people, while Kip-
pur is the day of fasting and praying. But the Lord does
notforgive sins unless the sinner is forgiven by his people.
Noticing the response of the local Jewish community
towards the upbuilding of our homeland and the Keren
Hayesod and Jewish institutions of this city, we see that
something more could and should have been done by each
one of us. I sincerely hope that the verdict of the Almighty
will be favorable for all of us in the coming year. An en-
couraging sign for all the Jews is that He has blessed us
with our beloved land, Eretz Yisroel, and all of us must
do our utmost for the noble purpose of lending a hand in
the rebuilding of our Homeland.

Wonder volumes thoughts of sages;
Written on its musty pages,
Studied through the hostile ages;
When holy church and crown net on
the Jew their frown.
'Twas his solace where he !nailed,
Israel's beacon light when stranded;
When oppressors toll demanded—
To let Lim bide in filthy quarters of
their town.

Orally it was transmitted,
Mishna's myths through it were knit-
tell,
As the ages onward fitted;
"III soulful seers at Sura dared to jot
it down.
Then its teaching went a winging,
Sacred precepts it was bringing,
"Glory! glory!" Jews were singing;
And hailed this marvel spirit in its
holy gown.
Babylonia, nursed and reared it,
Sages with their tales ndeared it,
Exiled Israel hugged and cheered it;
All through the changing epochs as
they came and went.

I hen became its Alma Mater,
Made the 'Talmud grander—greater!
And placed its precious folios in Ye-

New Year
Treatise deep would here be sifted,
Stumbling blocks would here be
lifted,
By the 'Talmudist most gifted;
With intonations sweeter than the
bells that chime.
Social was this house of knowledge,
Rich and poor care to this college,
Every Jew had to acknowledge;
That it produced the greatest schol-
ars of his time.
This I pray for all my friends
for the ensuing year. The nu-
merous policy holders whose
confidence I enjoy, will find me
as anxious for their welfare and
interest as I have been in the
past. I only pray that the same
mutuality of trust and confidence
will continue between us.

Bias bigots first decried it,
Papal bulls all rights denied it,
Their decision crucified it;
And flung the Talmud in the flames
with gloating eyes.
Seers thus sought their house of
learning,
Where the wisdom lamp was burning,
Fragment pages Jews were turning;
That soothed all the jeers upon the
heart of sighs.

Great perplexing themes propounded;
