MANY DUTIES TO MAKE EXACTING
DEMANDS UPON US DURING 5683.

RUSS CO. TO PRESENT
INTERESTING OPERAS

By RABBI A. M. HERSHMAN

The repertoire to be given by the
Russian Opera Company, of 106
members, which comes to Orchestra
Hall for a week's engagement in Oc-
tober under the management of De-
troit Concert Direction, will contain
a number of operas never presented
in Detroit before, including "Sne-
gouretchka," "Boris Godunoff," "La
Jaive," The ('zar's Bride" and oth-
ers. There will be a symphony or-
chestra and the stage settings and
costuming are both gorgeous and
costly.

American Israel is rich in potentialities. The signal
success with which the recent "drive" for the relief of our
unfortunate people in Europe was crowned amply justifies
this assertion. It evidences the wonderful possibilities
of American Jewry. Given the proper organization and
the right kind of leadership and Much that now seems im-
possible and futile might be undertaken and brought to a
successful issue.
But our spiritual resourses have not been tapped yet.
There is a marked want of leadership and of organization
worthy of the name. Amercian Israel has not yet found
himself, and it is high time that American Israel found
himself, realized the blessings he enjoys, the powers that
inhere in him and turned them to far-reaching account.
Many duties will press themselves upon us during the en-
suing year, duties that will make exacting demands upon
us. The confirmation of the Palestine Mandate by the
League of Nations offers us an unique opportunity for con-
constructive, creative work. The sad plight of Israel "af-
flicted and storm-tossed" is a challenge to us. And we
must turn our gaze intently homewards. We must address
ourselves to the task of making Judaism a telling and living
force in the life of the Jew.
May the year 5683 help us realize our vast powers and
possibilities and enable us to prove equal to them.

The Russian Opera Company Ws,
widely heralded for the merit of its
performances last season, in the
largest cities throughout the United
States, and during a six weeks' sea-
ton in New York. One of the lead-
ing sopranos, Ina Bourskaya, lac
been engaged to sing this season with
the Metropolitan Opera in New York
and also with the Chicago company.
Miss Bourskaya will appear with the
Russian Opera in Detroit, although
her tour with this company will be
limited.
The engagement of this unique or-
ganization for Detroit is a notable
feature of the early season's ■ dr, r-
ings.

Please extend to my fellow citizens of the Jewish race
my deepest felicitations upon the occasion of the beginning
of the Jewish New Year on Sept. 22. It is my sincere hope
that the New Year will bring with it increased happiness
and prosperity for the Jewish people of Michigan, and par-
ticularly Detroit, and that the entire state may continue
to benefit from the uninterrupted contribution to our spirit-
ual and material advancement for which the Jews have
been so generously responsible in the past. Despite an oc-
casional discordant note, it seems certain that the day of
genuine religious and racial tolerance is dawning. May
the celebration of your holiday typify this coming era of
freedom from bigotry and intolerance and may your New
Year be marked by the application of true principles of
liberality and right thinknig of which your people are out-
standing champions.

CONSTANTINOPLE JEWS
TO RASIE ORPHAN FUND

The Jewish Relief Committee in
Constantinople has appointed a spec-

ial "Propaganda Committee" for
raising funds to be duplicated by the
Near East Relief. The committee is

working hard to raise enough money
so that the new orphanage at Ortak-

euy may be opened and another 150
Jewish orphans taken off the streets
or from the wretched houses where
they are living and from which, in
many cases, they are being exploited.
The new orphanage, which is within
a stone's throw of the other Jewish
orphanage at Ortakeuy will also be
under the direction of Mr. and Mrs.
Angell. The older building will be
used for dormitories and dining
rooms; in the new building there will
be class rooms, the director's office,
industrial work rooms, and one dormi-
tory for the larger boys. When in
full running order the two buildings
will house comfortably 500 Jewish or-
phans and the problem of adequate
care of Jewish orphans in Constanti-
nople will be well solved.
