The New Year finds the Jewish world strongly agi-
tated. Troubles in the Old World are settling somewhat
and Jewish programs there are taking form, but in Amer-
ica there has been a strange and unaccountable growth
of anti-Jewish expression. While it is very unpleasant, it
is not an unmixed evil. It compels the Jews to stop and
take account of themselves and to determine whether to
continue to retreat before this feeling and adjust to its
demand, or to assert themselves on their highest plane. In
the long run, those who are consciously Jewish and respect
themselves accordingly, are in better shape to win the
world's respect than those, alas, their number is very
large, who accept the accident of Jewish birth with keen
regret and have no convictions, either as to the peculiar
content of Jewish religion or the inherent possibilities of
the Jewish people.
It is quite apparent that the time has come for the Jews
in America who have regard for the values of the Jewish
people, to support and encourage in every way all Jewish
educational movements which tend to strengthen our self-
respect. Without a knowledge of Hebrew, Jewish history,
Jewish ethics and Jewish religion, and they are all inter-
twined and interwoven, it is too much to expect the Jewish
child to value himself as a Jew.
The most pathetic Jew is not the persecuted immigrant
called "greenhorn" and discriminated against in every
way, but the child of the arrived Jew who receives rebuffs
and has no compensating knowledge and faith to make
hint realize that he is a conscious member of a people with
a great past and a glorious future.

The Jew everywhere celebrates two New Years each
twelve-month, which suggests his opportunity to make and
break twice as many resolutions as his neighbor.
At this Rosh ha-Shanah season, we might resolve
anew to-

1. "Do unto others as we would have others do
unto us."
2. "To cast our bread upon the waters."
3. "To seek peace and pursue it."

After all, these three homely resolutions provide for a
pretty gdod philosophy of life. even in this age of flappers
and tired business men.

NEW YEAR'S GREETINGS

By RABBI HENRY J. BERKOWITZ

1JC1.7 U o it
It
Detr

It is nty most earnest wish for the coming year that the
tremendous opportunities which are in the hands of the
younger generation of Detroit Jewry, will be utilized to
their fullest extent. Never before in the history of any
Jewish community in Aemrica has such a complete equip-
ment been assembled for the education and edification of
youth as has been brought into being by Congregation Beth
El.
My habit is rather to minimize than to exaggerate, but
in this case my enthusiasm for the great religious center
that has been reared. seems to be inadequate to convey the
true proportions of this far-reaching movement. It is built
for all the people, old and young, men, women and chil-
dren. but above all I wish to congratulate the young people
the boys and girls, on the glorious advantages that have
come into their lives.
God willing. this institution will soon be opened, and
then it is my ardent wish to give all my humble efforts
toward the furtherance of all those high hopes which are
aready forming in the hearts of the young people of this
community. Your ambitions shall be mine. and when I
wish you a happy New Year, am really wishing myself the
same, for in your happiness lies mine.
