DUEL OVER JEWS
13 UDAP EST.—The moot
question of how many Jews
shall be allowed to marticulate
in Hungarian universities has
brought about a challenge for
a duel between two prominent
Hungarian educators.
A controversy has been wag-
ing between the Universities of
Iludapebt and Szegedin, the
point at issue being whether
the law restricting the number
applies to the Jewish refugees
from the lost provinces.
Following the exchange of a
number of uncomplimentary
letters, the rector of Budapest
University, Dr. Barsony, pro-
fessor of surgery, has chal-
lenged the rector of Szegedin,
Dr. Meny, part professor of
civil jurisprudence, to a duel
with swords.

"ONCE UPON A TIME"
Title of New Folk-Opera in Seven
Scenes.
"Once Upon a Time" is the title of
what may be termed a "Folk-Opera,"
in seen scenes, the author of which!
is Mme. Anna Shomer-Rothenberg,
the well-known soprano and inter-
preter of Jewish Folk songs. Mme.
Rothenberg is the daughter of N. M.
Schaikewitz-Schomer, the pioneer Yid-
dish novelist, and the wife of Morris
Rothenberg, the well known Zionist
leader.
Mme. Rothenberg's play is t novelty
in the operatic field. While there may
have been what is known in Europe
as "Folk Songs Impersonated," where
certain melodies would he used during
a performance, this opera has been
compiled in such a way as to make
the thirty odd songs used constitute
one complete whole, with a sustained
plot and action.
On account of its novel form, the
play is expected to make a sensation
in the musical and professional circles.
"Once Upon a Time" will be produced
early this season in one of the better
Yiddish theaters in New York, after
which it will be presented in the large
Jewish renters of America and Can-.
ada, and probably also of Europe.
