But few of us realize the extent to
which Detroit made hydraulic hoists
and steel dumping bodies are used.
Car Wood is more widely known as
the "Speed Boat King" than as a
manufacturer. His genius in build-
ing and driving motor boat winners
is, however, but another example of
his mechanical ability.
In the truck field his products were
long since recognized as unequalled.
Gar Wood, while the truck industry
was still undeveloped, recognized that
lost time was the big drawback to
motorizing deliveries. He realized
that time must be saved. And he de-
veloped the hydraulically operated
hoist for mechanical unloading.
This device revolutionized the meth-
ods in many lines. It made trucks
more practical in the building trades
particularly. It made the horse-
drawn dump wagon as obsolete as the
old stage coach.
Truck makers and users alike saw
the advantage of Wood-Detroit Hy-
draulic Hoists and Steel Bodies; and
today over 90 per cent. of the truck
companies endorse them and nine
tenths of the power dump trucks are
equipped with them.
All this has made necessary the
new plant—modern, perfectly equip-
ped factory devoted exclusively to
building Wood - Detroit Hydraulic
Hoists and Steel Bodies; and has
brought to Detroit another first.
