How can one be an observant Jew
and at the same time more than ordi-
narily active in work for Zionism, is
best shown by the incident that occur-
ed last week in connection with Cantor
Josef Rosenblatt keeping his appoint-
ment with the Keren Ilayesod Com-
mittee at Long Branch.
Two weeks ago Rosenblatt went to
Toronto where he was supposed to
sing in one of the synagogues on Sat.
urday. As he was suffering from a
cold, at that time, his appearance was
postponed for the week following,
when he sang with his own choir he
had brought from New York.
Rosenblatt was also scheduled to
appear at the Long-Branch Mandate
Celebration, on Sunday evening, now,
Toronto is quite a distance from Long
Branch, and, in order to lie on time,
it would have been necessary for Ros-
enblatt to take the train about an
hour before the Sabbath was over.
Naturally, this was out of the ques-
Yet, so great was the fatuous
, cantor's desire to sing for the Keren
Ilayesod, that as soon as the first
three stars appeared that evening, he
raced in a machine to Buffalo, where
he caught the train for New York.
The train was late two hours, and by
the time Rosenblatt reached Scarbor-
ough Hall, Long Branch, it was al- -
most eleven o'clock. The audience
waited for him patiently, however,
and having been informed of all the
inconveniences the artist had gone
through during the lengthy journey,
marveled at the flexibility and fresh-
ness of his voice as he sang that night.
