Ford Defender Criticized.

By Chas. ti. Jogeph.)

Christian Science is playing such an important part in guiding the
lives of so many persons that it is interesting to consider its source
a. mentioned in The Quimby Manuscripts," edited by Horatio
Dresser. One can appreciate its shrewd side when we learn that its
o riginator was a Yankee clock maker and inventor. Ile called himself
"Dr." P. P. Quimby. He became a spiritual healer, One of his dis-
ciples was Mrs. Eddy, generally recognised as the developer of the
Christian Science cult. She was then (1862) Mrs. M. M. Patterson
a nd she wrote to Quimby that "I have been sick six years with spinal
inflammation" and she asserts that she must die unless Quimby can
save her, for he apparently does, for we find • couple of years later
that Mrs. Patterson has become a full fledged disciple of the master
and begins to lecture on "P. P. Quimby's Spiritual Science." Christian
Science now has a serious competitor in not less a person than Emil
Coue, the Frenchman, whose place in Nancy, France, threatens to
become as• much a mecca for "nervous' folks as Lousdes for the

Catholics.

It is not surprising that so many Jews are interested in these
me ntal cures because of their peculiar susceptibility to nervous

meats. Dr. Worcester, head of the Emanuel movement in Boston,
told me he had any number of Jews. Dr. Meyerson, the well known
authority on nervous diseases, says the same thing, that the number
of Jews who are seeking relief from nervous ailments is abnormal.
Christian Science attracts them for the same reason. Now Coue is
beginning to have an universal vogue. Coue shows how the sub-con-
scious mind can easily be controlled by the conscious mind and he, too,
claim that he can cure everything from headache to paralysis. Faith
is truly • wonderful thing. So ninny earnest folk are afflicted with
imaginitis that it is quite likely that many "miraculous" cures are

effected.

1 am in receipt of a criticism of Walter Hurt's book, "Truth About
the Jews," published by Horton & Co., Chicago. The readers of this
column have been made acquainted with this book, which is conceded
to be the most intelligent discussion of Jews and the Jewish question
by a Gentile that has appeared in a great many years. This criticism,
written by James A. Warren and appearing in a Johnstown, Pa.,
newspaper, is of unusual interest. Ile has this to say of Walter Hurt:

"Mr. Ilurt's 'Truth About the Jews establishes a luminous
landmark in human progress. Appealing to all Christendom,
the message of this remarkable book is vitally significant to the
present, as it will be to the coming generations of men. To
understand the Ilurtian mind, it may be said that when his task
had been completed Walter Ilurt felt more fully satisfied, more
deeply grateful than if all the wealth of the world had been
laid at his feet. lie felt that the talent entrusted to him had
been accounted for. The Hurtian heart pulsates with love for
men. The sublime theme of his inspired pen will give pause
to an unthinking world. To Israel it will come as a flaming
power to rekindle every century-slumbering hope for the uni-
versal reign of righteousness. Into innumerable Jewish homes
it will enter to meet with loving regard from every representa-
tive of the race it no nobly defends."

This is really • bit "thick." I read everywhere that the Soviet gov•
ernment is going to stamp out religion in Russia; that they have made
it • criminal offense punishable by imprisonment to teach religion in
the public schools. It is said that if they can't kill religion that at least
the Soviet officials will make Russia anti-Christian. I remember once,
asking Gregory Zilboorg, one time in K ky's cabinet and now
noted •s the translator of the play, "He Who Gets Slapped," about
the report of Russia's nationalization of women. He laughed and
asked me what sort of people I imagined lived in Russia. Why, he
said, the motherhood of Russia would rise in protest; besides, he con-
tinued, don't you think that Russians have any self-respect? It was
one of the lies put out by anti-Soviet propagandists.

So now when reading statements that the Soviet government in-
tends to stamp out religion in Russia, I feel like throwing them in the
waste basket. Reading between the lines, I would gather that there
is • distinct movement toward divorcing church and state in Russia,
and that is what I believe the Soviets are driving at. They are right,
too, in confining religious instruction to religious schools, exactly as it
ought to be in every country. When we say "religious," we mean
it as most people do with regard to such instruction and that is "sec-
tarain." I ant sure that if anyone wants to go to the trouble to in-
vestigate the situation he will find that neither the Russian govern
ment nor any other presumably civilized country wishes to eliminate

religion.

This is news! The Memphis Commercial Appeal, writing of Eu-
gene Meyer, Jr., quotes • paragraph from • recent issue of the De•r-

bron Independent, as follows:

"Eugene Meyer, Jr., may he chosen to head the Federal
Reserve Board. Ile is a member of District 12, the ruling
group of the American Jewish Committee. This means that he
is a member of the highest cabinet of the Jewish nation."

Well, well, I am interested to know that the American Jewish Com-
mittee is the highest cabinet of the Jewish nation. But what interests
me equally as much is to know that dear old Henry still has that brain-

Editor Detroit Jewish Chronicle:
I read in your issue of Sept. 8 a
letter by Louis Livingston in defense
of Henry Ford, with reference to his
anti-Semitic published attacks on the
Jewish people. It is ridiculous on the
. part of Mr. Livingston to try to de-
1 fend Henry Ford, when Ford know-
ingly falsely condemned the whole
' race.
It is true that through criticism
we improve, but Ford's criticism was
a revengeful one. Ford at first at
tempted to show that the interna-
tional Jew is trying to control the
world, when deep down in his heart
he knew that the Jew was glad to
be left alone and not try to con-

cate,' he would know that the reason
Jews are scattered over the four cor-
ners of the earth was because they
were conquered by the Romans and
lost their country and that is why
we are found in nearly every civil-
ized country. Jews are good citizens,
in every country they live in. In
America why should a Jew be pointed
out as a Jew with reference to his
citizenship? He is just as good a
' citizen as anyone else who happens
to be of a different faith. The Jew-
ish citizen's faith does not conflict
with his citizenship, as any broad-
minded citizen knows by the patriot-
! tem shown by the average Jew. Ford
does not refer to his Gentile fellow
men as Episcopalians or Presby-
terians, and why should he refer to
American citizens as Jews in criti-
cism when he could refer to certain ,
individuals as individual citizens. The
, answer is that Ford is too bigoted and
narrow-minded. Ford might have
been excused if he condemned a cer-
tain class of Jews if he was honestly
influenced by the "fake" protocols,
but when he attacked Jews because
they tried to defend their religious
liberty in the schools; when they tried
to have school examinations falling)
on the Jewish holidays postponed;'
when he attacked Jews because they
were captains of industry, attacked'
them because some were Socialists.
Like the child he blamed the Jew for
everything bad that happened, and
overlooking to give the Jew credit for
the good accomplished.
Ford, if he had his way, would not
let the Jew walk erect as a man
among men; he would keep the Jew
down as the Negroes were kept down
before the Civil War. Ford forgets
that the Jew has as much right to
this country as any other class of
people; as the Jews helped Columbus I
to discover America; the Jews helped
George Washington to make the
United States an independent coun-
try. George Washington thanked the
Jewish people in the United States
for the military and financial aid
given to him during the dark, strug-1
gling hours of the Revolutionary
' War. The Jews made it possible
, with their help for Ford's ancestors
to come to America and indirectly
for Henry Ford to become one of
the richest men in the world.
Ford called the Jews profiteers,
' but Ford in his business dealings
with the government made 529,000,-
000—blood money—and this money
he does not call profiteering. But
when Jews made a profit from gov-
ernment contracts Ford called it
profiteering. If Ford knew history,
he would know that a Jew, Hayman
Solomon, loaned to the colonial gov-
ernment a large sum of money to
help the government win the war
against England, and this sum of
money was never repaid.
No one will deny that Ford is a
great genius for making money. but
ask any "brain specialist" to examine
the writings of Ford's attack on the
Jews and that "brain specialist" will
say that Ford is a mono-maniac on
, the so-called Jewish question.

Two of the most important religions items of the hour. Out in
Ohio the Blues closed down everything that smacked of industry on
a recent Sunday, which most be considered one of the most important
steps in modern life in the direction of a deeper spiritual feeling. Of
equal importance was the edict of the Grand Pooh Bah of Zion, Ill.,
that ladies and gentlemen should bathe at a fixed distance from each
other and that the censor worked out with mathematical precision the
length of the bathing suits to be worn, so as to be absolutely sure that

I could enumerate instance after instance to verify the liberality
the (aliens, if space permitted. All of us know that it was finally in
Italy and through King Emanuel that David Lubin, the Jew, was en-
an international institute of

agriculture. It was Italy, too, that gave the foremost of economists

by an Italian, that Russia once refused to have an economic commis•

have been selected by the President as his advisers in the strike con•

that "Lasker enjoys the confidence of the President to • deg.e

largely by Lasker's advice in handling the railroad and mine situa-
tions. Most of my readers probably know that Lasker is the head of
