The establishment of direct shipping facilities between Odessa and New
York via Triode is favored by Rome Jewish Workers as an aid to Jewish emi-
grants from Russia. Direct shipping is calculated to avoid many of the
hardships of the wanderers obliged to pass through countries where they
; are not welcomed. The Italian government has been approached with re-
; gard to this matter, which is being urged by the United Emgiration Com-

Declaring that the participation of Jews in the approaching elections
to the Polish Sejm would evoke the anti-Semitic feeling among their neigh-
bors, Ukrainian leaders are warning the Jews to follow their lead in boy-
cotting the elections. The Jews are not to be intimidated by such threats,
the Lemberg Tageblatt declares, adding that the relation of the East Ga-
lician Jews to the elections will be determined by "their own political in-
terests." It is understood that the question of participation in the Polish
elections will be included in the agenda of the Zionist conference in October.

Praise for the heroism of a Jewish Frenchman whom a court-marital had
ordered shot for treason was lavished by Premier Poincare at the unveiling
et Guebwiller of the monument in memory of David Block of the French
Flying Corps. In 1916, while flying an aeroplane, Block was forced to
descend in the German lines at Guebwiller. He himself destroyed the aero-
, plane and was taken prisoner. Being an Alsatian, he was charged with
treason and condemned to be shot. An Alsatian lawyer, a Jew named
Nordmann, was reduced to the rank of a private for defrosting Block before
the court-martial.

has been formed with a capital of f4,000. The company has obtained a
lease of the marshy and near Athlit from the lea (Jewish Colonization As-

convers't n of the malarial swamps into a healthy one. Another com-

The League of Nations has been asked to try "extraordinary measures"
! for the protection of the minority nationalities in Kattowitz and other
parts of Polish Upper Silesia, in a memorandum submitted by representa-
tives of the Committee of Jewish Delegations with headquarters in Paris.
The note has been referred to the Polish delegates to the league session.
, The demand for protection has grown out of the recent riots in Kattowitz,
during which many Jews, includnig a visiting American citizen, were injured
and four reported killed. The Latvian delegates are understood to have
declined to sign an undertaking for the safeguarding of rights of the mi-
nority nationalities similar to those accepted on behalf of Lithuania by
its delegates. ,
