Ford's Friends Are Running for Congress.

Some wag might paraphrase a well-known saying of the
late Mr. Shakespeare to this effect: "The evil that men do—
is done for a purpose."
At least, so it would seem by looking over the list of en-
trants in the political Free-for-All that is scheduled for Sep-
tember 12th.
We are told by the Detroit News of Sunday, August 13,
that 179 contestants have filed petitions to place their names
on the ballot.
• • • •

No less than seven names appear in the list of those who
wish to represent the thirteenth district in Congress.
Heading the list we find the names of GEORGE LORD and
G. OLIVER FRICK.

You folks who go to the polls on September 12, will want
to know something about these gentlemen. The one is said to
be a "tax expert;" the other you will recall presided over the
destinies of the Immigration Office for some time.
Both of these men were members of the last house of Rep-
resentatives at Lansing. They were among the fifteen who
voted against Representative George Welsh's bill that passed
the Legislative body somewhat over a year ago.
The bill provided for the creation of a general Libel Law to
protect groups of people from slanderous assaults. Its intro-
duction in the Legislature was inspired by an effort to force
the discontinuance of the libelous articles .appearing against
the Jewish people in Henry Ford's paper.

as opposing the system and scheme of conversion as advanced
and practiced by Billy Sunday. A still stronger sign of awaken-

Charles Aked was reported to have resigned as member and

vice-president of a committee which instigated one of Sunday's
six-day revivals, saying that in his opinion there is no such God
as Sunday pretends, no such heaven and no such hell.

SHMA YISROEL

Prayer Recited Twice Daily by Orthodox Jew.

By RABBI JUDAH L. LEVIN

(Editor's Note--The following in-
teresting article is a translation of a
chapter of Judah L. Levin's latest
Hebrew book, "Sefer Hadronim,"
now in the hands of the printer.)

Great is the power of the Jew con-
tained in the "Shma Yisroel," the
prayer, "hear Oh Israel, the Lord
Our God, the Lord is One," recited
twice daily by every Orthodox Jew.
It is a wonderful story of strength
u nlimited.
The ideal of the Shemang is a soul
ideal, more powerful and more ele-
v ating than the corporeal strength. It
g ives the Jews a power of endurance.
Its supernatural power enables our
p eople to suffer troubles that other
n ations cannot endure. When the

Four Detroit Representatives voted against the bill. Cop- t is the Shma Yisroel that helped

uge to our people from the bandit
ordes, on condition that they put

heir lips, like Rabbi Akiba.
• • •
What caused them to forget their
angs? The Shemang was the real
hloroform that caused them to live

The explanation is simple. For,
c hat is it that feels pain? Not flesh

ody, and the body doesn't feel the

that the measure was "INTENDED TO PUT A STOP TO THE I

Without going into the merits of the Welsh Bill at this time ,
we might remind our readers that among its provisions was one

when he was persecuted and tortured
terribly, dying with the cry of Shma
Yisroel on his lips. His pupils asked
him: "Is it possible that a human be-
eing should be able to bear it all?"
And Rabbi Akiba answered that it
was the greatest moment of his life,
that he had looked forward to the
fulfillment of the Shma Yisroel in a
corporal way and by taking things in
his own hands.
• •
In our own • day, many Jews have
done like Rabbi Akiba. We have ex-
perienced a double catastrophe. In
some countries our bodies were tor-
tured, in others our spirit.
And yet people pose as our friends
and make promises. Woe to the many
Akibas. But the shame is civiliza-
tion's that people should stand by
and watch these terrible occurrences.
Can't you understand that the peo-
ple at the rudder of the world's af-
fairs are silent and do not say any-
thing?
Lloyd George recently pointed out
how low it is for people who read the
Jewish psalms on Sundays to murder
and pillage on week-slays the very
people who wrote these psalms.
In Russia, the Jewish soul pains.
Our people wants to be left alone, in
peace. Those who brutally attack
our people are of the class referred
to and scolded by Rabbi Eleazar for
preferring money (the bodily things)
to life (the soul).
But the reciting or the Shma Yisroel
teaches us that we must be the oppo-
site, holding life dearer than money;
that we must be Jews with "all our
heart, and all our might, and all our
soul." We must sacrifice to God and
be Jews in the full sense of the word
and in the fulfillment of all the re-
quirements of our people.

To the intelligent and impartial observer it has long been
a puzzle how enlightened Christians could tolerate and even
support the methods and measures of Christian evangelists,
such as those of a "Billy" Sunday or a "Gypsy" Smith. No
attempt has ever been made to hide the real motives that
prompt these individuals to carry on their revivals in the man-

time he played his part well, and in
our own time his existence would
still have brought advantages to the
Jewish people. We firmly believe
that a Shadchan would have helped
greatly in diminishing the number of
intermarriages between Jews and
non-Jews. It is now a well estab-
ished fact that there is a greater dan-
ger of intermarriage in the small
Jewish community than in the larger
Jewish centers. The smaller city of-

a great number of cases.

What to Be Proud Of.

I must not think much of my shoes or
my frock,
Of my hat with its nice curly feath-
er,
For Mammy she tells me, "You can-
not be proud
Of stuff such as silk, straw and
leather."

For Mammy says, "Child, if you want
to be proud,
Be proud, then, of something far
better."
And she won't let me think I am
pretty or smart,
Or can draw, or can write a nice
letter.

"What may I be proud of?" I asked
her today;
And she answered, "Be proud of
your race;
That's wiser than thinking of jewels
or clothes,
Of your talents, your wealth, or
your face.

"Be proud that you belong to the na-
tion that gave
The Commandments of God to the
world.
Be proud that through years of op-
pression we kept
The banner of Israel unfurled.

firm to our faith,
Win respect and esteem for our
creed.
If strangers think better of Jews for
your sake,
You may be a proud girlie indeed."

he asked.
Rashi nodded his head very feebly
and said: "Yes, your Eminence, I
am."
The bishop turned to the duke and
told him how this rabbi had cured
him when he had been on a journey
in Palestine.
"What a noble and good-hearted
man he must be," exclaimed the
duke. "I shall set him free at once
and give him my protection as long
as he is here."
In the meantime, the people of the
city had attacked the Jews in the
Jewish quarter, for the Jews had to
live in a certain part of the city and
nowhere else. They had seen the
soldiers of the duke take the fam:eis
visitor prisoner, so they thought the
dul.e did not care what they would
do to the other Jews.
Word of the attack had been
brought to Rashi.
"Ito not free me," cried Rashi, as
he fell at the feet of the duke. "Free
my people and save them from their
enemies."
The duke at once mounted Rashi
on a horse and sent several of his
soldiers with him. They drove rap-
idly to the Jewish quarter and when
the people saw the soldiers with Ra-
shi, the Jewish stranger, they fled
and ran back to their homes.
Rashi's kindness to the bishop had
saved hundreds of his fellow Jews
from suffering and death, for the
bishop had kept his promise which
he had made up in Palestine.
A few days later Rashi returned
to France in peace.

Our Jewish Holidays.

RABBI AND BISHOP

By Nathan Zack.

The Jewish holidays are as a phase
of human civilization, entirely neces-
sary for the reconstruction, memory
and upkeep of the Jewish religion.
After every Jewish holiday, the mere
memory of it affords me great pleas-
ure. Every Jewish holiday is sym-

great was done, or something that is
worth remembering took place.
Rosh Ilashona is approaching. A

prophesied, and it is therefore the
duty of every Jew to work for the
