In anticipation of the loan which the Palestine government is about to
float for public utilities, the administration has invited the engineer Palmer
to draft and submit plans for the erection of harbors at Haifa and Jaffa.
The preliminary work at the Finite port, which is a natural harbor, was
begun several months ago with the construction of a jetty.
Mrs. Alexander Kohut of New York, chairman of the Council of Jewish
Women's Committees on European Reconstruction, has been conferring
with heads of Jewish women's organizations in several cities of Europe.
She is promoting a plan of co-operation that will eventually bring Jewish
women's organizations throughout the world into a closer union..
Former Ambassador Morganthau is in Rome in the interest of his scheme
for saving Austria by means of private American aid. Mr. Morgenthau is

Pope on July 24, with whom he had a discussion regarding Palestine.

Fearful lest the anti-British disturbances in Mesopotamia may greed
to Trans-Jordania, Sir Herbert Samuel, the High Commissioner for Pales-

territory with the help of the British. The High Commissioner is accom-
panied by Sir Wyndham Deedes, civil secretary. It is held to be likely
that the Trans-Jordania ruler will ask the Palestine High Commissioner

Adelbert Korfanty, whose unsuccessful attempts to form a cabinet in
face of the opposition of President Pilsudski and a majority of the Sejm
I brought the country to the verge of serious political crisis, has been obliged
to withdraw. Dr. Nowak, chancellor of the University of Cracow, has been
invited to constitute the new ministry. Korfanty's defeat, which spells •
decisive victory for Pilsudski, the Chief of State, was brought about through
the coalition of the left-wing parties with the representatives in Parliament
of the minority groups. The new Prime Minister is described as a "Liberal
, Conservative."

Lord Sydenham would have the Jews entering England register as be-
longing to the Jewish nationality, according to a question in the House of
Lords which he put to the government, asking whether Jews who claim
to be a nation and have been recognized as such, having been provided with
a national home, will henceforth be so regitsered upon entering England.
Lord Sydenham has filed three other questions: First, what percentage of
crimes in England have been committed by aliens; secondly, what is the
number of aliens allowed to enter England since the armistice; thirdly, what
is the number of unnaturalized aliens residing in the country .

That the dispersed officers of General Wrangel's army are continuing
their anti-Jewish agitation on Jugo-Slavian soil is the conviction voiced by
; the Jewish press of the country. They point out that the Novoye Vremje,
' a Russian organ transplanted to that country, is not only inciting the popu-
lation against the Jews, but is exerting some influence in government circles.
This, the Jewish press declares, accounts for the unfavorable attitude
I the government has frequently assumed towards the Jewish residents. As
to the conduct of the demobilized officers of Wrangel's camp, it is alleged
that while they are collecting funds for so-called relief purposes from Jews
as well as non-Jews, their hostile agitation continues.
The Parliament of Ilungary was thrown into a turmoil when it was
invaded by members of the Awakening Magyars, who came to demand the
release of Captain liejjas, the notorious leader of the White Terrorists.
The turbulent visit to Parliament followed an unsuccessful interview with
Count Bethlen, who declined to release their leader. The Magyars rushed
to the press gallery and inflicted severe beatings on the journalists of the
liberal and Socialist press. Jewish journalists and those suspected as Jews
were the special victims of the Magyars' wrath. The journalists were
powerless, as the invading band numbered about 150 men. The spirit of
the invaders was shown in cries emitted by some of them: "Give us Jewish
blood to drink."

The Agudah Israel did not insist upon the alteration of the text of the
mandate, nor did it demand postponement in ratification, Agudah leaders
now declare in a memorandum explaining the action of their delegates dur-
ing the recent session of the Council of the League of Nations. They de-
' dare that they submitted a memorandum deploring that any organization
should exercise a monopoly over the Jewish agency for Palestine. In view
of the "crucial moment" and the necessity for a "united front," the Agu-
dah, it is asserted, merely asked that an opportunity be given after the
ratification of the mandate to so reconstruct the Jewish agency as to in-
clude representatives of all independent Jewish world organizations inter-
ested in the reconstructidn of Palestine.

According to a correspondent of The Jewish Chronicle, the number of
Jews at present dom'ciled in Persia is about 100,000, and they are under-
going many vicissitudes. At Grmish, of a Jewish population which once
numbered 4,000, only 500 remain; the rest have been massacred. At
Meshed there are about 7,000 Jews who have bene forced to change their
creed. Secretly, however, they Mill observe the Jewish religion. The law
accords to the Jews full equality, and Dr. Lugman Nuharri is the Jewish
representative ni Parliament. In reality, however, the Jews are subjected
to many restrictions, especially in commerce. Our coreligionists enjoy no
rotection in the event of massacres and they are even afraid to approach
the English minister to complain against the authorities.
Discount
Now, for the first time in history, this wonderful studio-made furniture
goes on sale at a discount! Danersk furniture is the finest made in
America. This is not a claim, but a fact, recognized by decorators, artists
and all those who have made the furnishing of homes a study. No ve-
neers are used in its construction. It is hand-made of solid woods, most-
ly mahogany and walnut, exquisitely decorated in original and exclu-
. sive motifs. On display in Detroit only at Weil's.
Every Danersk piece in our galleries is in-
cluded. There are chamber suites in the Em-
pire spirit; a Wittersham group, as pictured
above, in soft French grey and hand deco-
rated; Windsor sets in green and black, and
choicest of all a Spanish peasant set, elegant
but inexpensive.
There are also dining room groups in true
Chinese Chippendale treatment, both in paint-
ed finishes and solid mahogany; Sheraton is
also represented with an enamel inlaid set, as
well as many other individualistic creations.
There are also odd pieces for the living
room, Old English in type; dainty breakfast
sets, groups for the sun room and the hall.
Although Danersk furniture is so finely
made it is moderate in price. In fact at a
full discount its cost is less than that of
ordinary furniture. There are no duplicates
of the pieces shown. Therefore an early se-
lection is advised.

Digesting the Week's News
(Concluded from Editorial page.)
of being the American Jews as op-
posed to the Yiddish speaking class,
whom they styled the "foreign" and
"un-American" and what-not.
A Local Instance.
At a celebration held recently by
a local Zionist group on the occasion
of the ratification of the Palestine
mandate, this prejudice against Yid-
dish was seen in action. One of De-
troit's most prominent Jews was the
speaker of the evening. Before he
addressed the society, the members
staged an impromptu demonstration,
rejoicing at the action of the League
of Nations. Our prominent Jew,
upon mounting the platform, imme-
diately poured cold water on the ju-
bilant Zionists by telling them that
they ought not believe what the Yid-
dish papers told them, but should
rather wait for a verification of the
news in the English press.
An Inexcusable Opinion.
As a matter of fact, the news of
the ratification of the mandate ap-
peared in the English press on the
very day of the league's action, Sat-
urday, July 22.
That our Jewish
leader should have failed to notice
this in the press is excusable. Even
we newspaper men occasionally
"miss" things of importance. But to
hold the opinion that our leader does
is absolutely inexcusable. Jewish
news is at present handled and sent
broadcast by the Jewish Correspon-
dence Bureau and Telegraphic
Agency, which is among the best in-
formed and most reliable news agen-
cies in the world, and there isn't a
single item in the Yiddish press that
is not as reliably handled as that of
the daily non-Jewish papers.
Result of Prejudice.
The Detroit Jewish leader's opinion
is undoubtedly a result of his preju-
dice against the Yiddish language and
the Yiddish speakers. The prejudice
has been no deeply rooted in many
men that those who entertained it
used it as a weapon against all Jew-
ish nationalist movements in this
country. Zionists were attacked as
belonging to the Yiddish speaking
"rabble." They were despised to the
extent of being hated. \Se quote the
above figures to these prejudiced
Jewish Americans. Facts and figures
prove that the Yiddish is a power,
prejudice on the part of our "philan-
thropic co-religionists" notwithstand-
ing.
Einstein Threatened.
The group that caused the murder
of Dr. Walter Rathenau is now
threatening Professor Albert Ein-
stein with assassination, and the
noted Jewish scientist has tempor-
arily fled from Germany to escape
from the German anti-Semitic zone.
There are still those amongst us who
regard Germany as the promised land
for the German Jews. The murder
of Rathenau was not enough to con-
vince them that the land of the kais-
ers is as bad a spot for the Jews to-
day as is Poland or the Ukraine. Per-
haps the Einstein incident will open
their eyes and prove to them that the
only way the Jewish problem will be
solved will be through the nationalist
ideal.
JEWISH REFUGEES ARE
WITHOUT DESTINATION
CONSTANTINOPLE.—(J. C. B.
By mail.)—Emigration from Soviet
Russia is continuing under very diffi-
cult circumstances. For the last six
months 1381 new arrivals from Sov-
iet Russia have been registered in the
offices of the Jewish Refugee Aid Com-
mittee, of whom about three hundred
have no definite destination, while the
remainder is bound for various coun-
tries, such as Palestine, the United
States, Argentine, etc. The bulk of
them is coming via Batum, where,
besides Tiflis, the only International
Representative is in function, but
there have been also lately arrivals
from other Russian ports, such as Od-
essa, Sebastopol, etc. This category
of refugees is undergoing greater
hardships than those who are coming
via Datum, as they are not in posses-
sion of an Interallied visa, there be-
ing no Interallied Representative in
their places of departure. Permission
to land for them must be obtained on
1■ %.1kILI10 1. 11■■\■■■4
arrival and they are sometimes de-
tained on board ships for several days
until they are able to land. Lately
the Interallied authorities have adopt-
ed a rigid attitude in connection with
the granting of landing permission for
Jewish refugees and the French au-
thorities especially, have categorical.
ly refused to allow refugees to land in
Constantinople. Their argument is
that the refugees are of Russian nat-
ionality and that therefore the Rus-
sian Consulate (a remnant of Wran-
gel's Government) must undertake the
necessary steps. It is self-understood
that no Russian official would ever
undertake to intervene on hebalf of
Russian Jewish refugees. As an ex-
ample of the great difficulties which
are being encountered here it must he
stated that a transport of 24 refugees
from Odessa is now being detained
here and, no far, all steps that have
been undertaken to obtain landing
have proved unsuccessful. The situa-
tion of the refugees on board cannot
be described in words and they must
absolutely be brought to shore to be
cared for.
"American Anti-Semitism."
Writing on "American Anti-Semi-
tism," Mentor, in a recent issue of the
London Jewish Chronicle, says that
"even a man like the late facob Schiff,
with all his millions, and his undoubt-
ed financial power was still kept soc-
ially at arms' length." Mentor relates
that it was said of the late Pierpont
Morgan when asked if he knew Mr.
Schiff, that he replied that he knew
him as far as — street, indicating
the street bounding New York's mon-
ey market, or stock exchange. After
reviewing the growth of the anti-Se-
mitic movement in this country, Men-
tor concludes that America was no ex-
cepti, n t3 the rule formulated by
Herzl that the Jew carries anti-Semi-
ti.m into every country into which he
goes, with the pack on his back.
