DEFENDERS ARE BEATEN
IN GAME WITH LEADERS

More than 200 Young Judaeans
and their friends Sunday attended
the annual Young Judaea excursion
to Sugar Island and joined in a series
of field events.
The feature of the day's sporting
activities was a baseball game be.
tween the Young Judaea leaders and
the Defenders of the White and Blue.
Sol Figelsky pitched a great game for
the Judaeans but fell under the su-
perior force of the leaders, the final
count being 17 to 14 in favor of the
latter.
The Knights of Judaea defeated
the Maccabees of Judaea in a base-
ball game by a score of 19 to 7.
The Knights also carried off hon-
ors in track. Reuben Cohen won first
track honors. Sidney Klein of the
Defenders of the White and Blue and
Morris Waxman of the Knights took
second and third track honors.
The annual track meet that was
originally to have been held at Sugar
Island last Sunday was postponed to
a date late in August.

HOPE FOR BETTER THINGS

BUDAPEST.—(J. T. A.)—As a
result of the Hungarian elections
ending not only in a victory for the
government, but also In the defeat of
its extreme anti-Jewish wing, a recon-
ciliation between the Jewish leaders
and the government is considered not
unlikely. In consequence of such a
reconciliation, it is expected that
Jews may have their licenses restored
for the operation of cinema theaters
and for the sale of liquor. A very
important clause is expected in the
abolition of the "numerous clausus."

Merits of Rutenberg Plan.

The Rutenberg concession played
a significant part in both the attack
and the defense, Lord Balfour in his
splendid defense dwelling on the
merits of the contract between the
crown agents and Mr. Rutenherg for
the concession to utilize Palestine's
water resources. The Rutenberg
scheme had been examined in the
most critical spirit by experts of the
Colonial Office, who unanimously
such a character that it is impossible
to hope for a better contract, Lord
Balfour declared, adding that there
is nothing in the scheme smacking of
undue favoritism to any group. If
carried into effect it would bring eco-
nomic development and capital into
Palestine. The notion that the scheme
would be used as a method of oppres-
sion is a most fantastic accusation,
he said.
Lord Balfour in delivering his
maiden speech in the House of Lords
in defense of the Palestine mandate
in its present form spoke not only in
his privtae capacity as the author of
the Zionist Declaration of Novem-
ber, 1917, but on behalf of the gov-
ernment, acting in the absence of
Lord Curzon as Foreign Secretary.
Lord Balfour made a point of the
fact that the declaration had been
accepted by the American govern-
ment and subsequently confirmed by
the United States Senate. lie de-
nied the suggestion and emphatically
declared that not a single immigrant
received any support from public
funds. Lord Balfour also expressed
the belief that the growth of the
population and the development
Palestine were possible only by draw-
ing upon the enthusiasm of the Jew-
ish communities throughout the
world, adding that that support
would be forthcoming as soon as the
mandate question was settled.
