Y. $1,000 CLUB 4() (Copyright, 1921. By Chas. II Joseph.) Sir Arthur Conan Doyle created one of the most interesting detec• tiers of modern times, "Sherlock Holmes." He is also a physician of unusual repute. But neither of these qualify him to speak any more a uthoritatively on the subject of after life than the most ignorant person in all the world. Sir Arthur has come to this country to tell us of his impressions of and his experiences with spiritualism. Three thousand five hundred persons crowded to hear him deliver his open• ing lectures and hundreds more could not gain admission. This indi• cafes just how greatly the subject of the hereafter interests men and women. When one considers how superstitious some of our most intellectual men and women are; when we recall hod judge. of ability sat and gravely listened to evidence of witchcraft and sentenced witches to be burned at the stake, amid the approval of other educated non and women; when we consider how men of profound learning have affili• sled themselves with the most impossible undertakings; when we re- ember that today millions of the foremost thinkers of the world believe in • burning hell; then it is easy to understand how men like Doyle and Lodge and Garland and Cage and King and all the rest of these worthies have taken up the impossible cult of spiritualism. And furthermore just because of all these things their achievements in their chosen fields should not invite any special confidence in their ex- periments with the spirits of the departed. Ina recent issue of the Congressional Record there appears a paper by Madison Grant, who is somewhat of • student of racial questions and who has written • hook entitled "A Decaying Race." Mr. Grant speaks about the evil of immigration and that is one reason why John- son, chairman of the immigration committee, has included it in the Record. There is just one piece of un-American bunk that Mr. Grant has stated that I am surprised slipped past the argus-eyed politicians: "Two generations ago we would have also demanded re- ligious uniformity, but now that has been cheerfully forgotten and we appear to be ready to abandon Christianity itself as a test of admission. Thanks to the foreign press and the encour- agement it is receiving from native Americans, we may have serious trouble in maintaining even the supremacy of the Eng- lish tongue." Now did you ever read such rot written by ■ man who pretends to know what he is talking about? And it is amazing that a man of Johnson's brains should have used such nonsense in an attempt to bolster up his position. Statements like these belong properly in the Saturday Evening Post, which magazine seems quite willing to pub. lisp anything regardless of how ridiculous it is so long as it is anti. immigration. What has Christianity to do with immigration? What I always thought that business is it of anyone what a man believes? if there was one country in all the world where a man could worship according to the dictates of his conscience it was in America. But apparently Madison Grant has other notions on the subject. As for the English tongue becoming superseded by foreign languages, it is such a stupid statement that one wonders how its author could pose as an authority on the subject. The sooner we get done with these half-baked, ill•formed authorities (7) a better understanding there will be of the immigration question. Rabbi M. Ranson of Temple Beth Emeth of Albany advocates • "Jewish revival" during Passover and suggests the innovation of a ceremony of confession of faith to be imposed upon every adult mem- ber of the congregation some time during the festival. 11e also appeals to Christians, laymen and clergy, to lend their moral support to the movement. It seems scarcely credible that Rabbi Ramon has taken such • position; if he has I pause long enough to inquire: Why the Christian clergy and laity? What have they to do with our religious revivals? As well ask that Billy Sunday should urge Jewish "moral" support in his revival campaigns. Sometimes I think the Central Con- ference of Reform Rabbis should have a national board of censors to pass on utterances of its members that are given to the daily press. Even in a Bolshevist regime superstition holds sway. A Jew whose business it is to emery away in sacks children who die in Jewish refugee homes and inter them in the cemetery was almost the victim of an• other "ritual murder" the other day While on his way to a cemetery near Moscow he set down his sack for a moment on the sidewalk, when the mouth of the bag dropped, ling the contents. In • moment • crowd had gathered and threatened him with violence. He escaped the fury of the mob through the intervention of police. When brought before the judge and accused of murdering • Christian child for the purpose of using its blood in the Passover sacrament, only a few mo- ments were necessary to reveal the true state of affairs and he was immediatley discharged. This indicates that the charge of ritual mur- der, which only a few years ago was made an international sensation through the trial of Mendel Beiliss, • Russian Jew, is still in the minds of the ignorant. In Bruenn, Austria, it is reported that an anti-Semite died and in his will be had • stipulation that no Jew should be permitted to follow his body to the grave. He also bequeathed a million and a half (it doesn't say what) to the greatest anti-Semite in the community, who is also the editor of • contemptible anti-Semitic sheet. Yet the arch anti-Semite who passed on his way and left the world the richer by his going hopes to enter the Kingdom of Heaven through the good offices of • Jew, Jesus. It may be necessary for Reform Jews to take up the study of He- brew and to acquaint themselves thoroughly with the Talmud and other Hebrew literature as a matter of protection. In one of our ex- changes is noted the interesting item that the Polish anti-Semitic or• ganization "Razvoi" has granted diplomas to four Poles who have suc- cessfully passed the courses in the Talmud and other Hebrew literature rceently started by that organization as an effective means of opposing Jews. The diplomas state that the recipients are now qualified to be leaders of the anti-Semitic movement in Ploand. In this country we cannot appreciate fully to what extent anti•Semitism is rampant in Europe and to what lengths anti-Semites will go in order to vent their spite on the Jews. Here we thought that Henry Ford was a wicked Jew-baiter, but he is only an amateur compared to the gentlemen who make of Jew•baiting • fine art. A writer in the American Hebrew of New York finds occasion to express his uneasiness over conditions in Anglo-Jewry. As in this country there are three wings of English Jewry, the extreme Ortho- dox, the so-called Conservative and a small number of Reformers. Realizing that something ought to he done to bring these three groups into closer relationship for the purpose of promoting a deper religious life ;mom/ all Jews, an attempt was made to annex to Jews' College, the Orthodox training school for rabbis, a "Liberal" wing for the mid- dle•of-the•roaders" who wanted to be trained for "Conservative" or "Reform" pulpits. But the Jews' College group opposed it and a serious division has developed in the community, leaving all elements about as they were before the "coalition" movement started. Despite denials, there is no question but that the position of the English Jew is much more unsatisfactory than it was before the war. There is no more of an open and avowed anti-Jewish feeling. Leading Englishmen, non•Jews, who at one time would have hesitated to ex- press their unfavorable opinions of Jews openly are now doing it with- out the slightest hesitancy. The English press makes no bones of printing anti•Jewish articles on the slightest pro•ocation. Two or three of the English journals are making • systematic campaign against the Jews and doing all within their power to bring home to their readers what they choose to term "The Jewish Menace." These things are not figments of the imagination but actualities. Just re- cently Hillaire Belloc published a book entitled "The Jews," in which he attempts to show that • war between the Christian and the Hebrew worlds is inevitable. This book has come in for a large share of atten- tion from the English press, which discusses it seriously. And all of an alarming degree in them agree that •nti•Semitism has risen to ■ England. ---• ■•■ • Professor James Mayor writes in the Wall Street Journal concern• ing the "Future of Russia" and among other statements I find this quite amazing one: "If, as seems by no means beyond the bounds of possibility, the Russian elements which have felt the heavy hand of the Jews upon them, turn and massacre the Jews as they have done before, all foreigners would run the risk of suffering equally with the Jews, since in the popular mind they would inevitably be identified with the Jewish government from which they had received concessions." I would like to ask Professor Mayor where • "Jewish" government exists in Russia? I know the Jews are trying to work out Jewish con. trol in Palestine, but nothing that I have heard or read ever led me to as laid upon Rustic I believe that "the he••y hand of the Jews" know that Trotsky is • renegade Jew, but Lenine is not; I know that there era Bolshevists who are Jews, but more Jews are not Bolshe•ists. What puzzles me is that • man who is an authority, apparently, on the subject should make of this Communistic movement a Jewish move. Went. He surely ought to know better. Just such thoughtless state- went. and sinister propaganda (even though it be unintentional) will lead to just such horrible results as predicted by the professor. And he is not the only one who looks for • terrible uprising against the Jews when Bolshevism falls, but I seriously question it. I agree with 'neither authority who says that the Jews will play a prominent part in bringing about • "one democracy" in Russia. I would ask Pro- fessor Mayor to explain to me what he means by suggesting that the Russian people are holding Jews responsible for their present trouble. —.- Hers is something that Sisterhoods ought to help develop—con• gregational singing. One rabbi says: "I always maker it • point of especially announcing a hymn at every service which the congreg•• Lion can join in singing, but they only rise, stand and look at their hymnals. You can't get Jewish people to sing." Now isn't this strange when you consider that Jews have been the greatest singers of all tun•T So it is urged that Temple Sisterhoods encourage congrega- tional singing by haying congregational singing • feature of every ens of their meeting. And it seems to me that this should play an impor- tant part in every Sisterhood program. I Intel 1413 to 1447 ctirroao. WOODWARD AVE Thousands of Volunteers En- rolled for Keren Hayesod Campaign. Headquarters for the New York Keren Ilayesod drive, which is sched- uled to start April 10, reports the suc- cessful launching, with Samuel Un- termer as president, of the Thousand Dollar Club, consisting of persona who have contributed a minimum of $1,000 to the Keren Ilayesod for the year. The idea for such a club was con- ceived by Boris Grabelsky, in whose home the temporary meeting for the organization was held. The perma- nent organization was effected at a meeting held Saturday evening, March 25, at the Hotel Astor where about 50 members were present. The reports state that Mr. Unter- myer is using all his great abilities and influence towards making the club a success. On Sunday, April 2, he arranged a special dinner for the members of the club, which was held at the Hotel Gotham, Fifty-fifth street and Fifth avenue, New York. The attendance was close to a hundred, and a formal initiation of members took place in which Professor Otto Warburg, Vladimir Jabotinsky, and Bernard Stone of the Sokolow Delega- tion participated. Army of Volunteers Organised. The most important factor in the coming drive, according to reports which reach us from the campaign headquarters, is the army of volun- teers which is being recruited and trained for an intensive house-to- , house canvass of the Jews of New York. Over 2,000 such volunteers hone al- ready been enrolled and sectional con- ferences and meetings are being held for the purpose of increasing the num- ' ber. One of the attractive features at most of these meetings is the exhihi- ' tion of moving pictures of Palestine. Most of these meetings are being ad- dressed by Vladimir Jabotinsky who regards the work of the volunteers as of first importance and endeavors to infuse into the role of the volunteer for the Keren Ilayesod the same spirit he so successfully infused into the military units for the organization of which he was responsible in Palestine. One of the speakers at the conference which took place in Harlem on April 2 was Congressman Isaac Siegel. Women's Committee a Factor. The 2,000 volunteers enrolled through the efforts of Mr. Jabotinsky and others do not include the special corps of women volunteers which is being organized by the Women's Com- mittee, headed by Mrs. Richard Got- theil as }'resident and Mrs. Fradelle W. Haskell as Chairman of the Execu- tive Committee. Under the auspices of this committee a conference was held at the Pennsylvania Hotel on Monday afternoon and evening, March 27, at which representatives of women's organizations from all over the city were present. The various sections of the city are to have special women volunteer groups which will co-operate with the other volunteers. Further reports state that Mra. Gottheil has been invited by repre- sentative women of Boston, Baltimore, Pittsburgh, and other cities to assist them in organizing committees model- led upon the one in New York. In other cities such committees have al- ready been organized. "High in Quality, Chief Examiner Suggests Sim- plification of Method Now Enforced II NEW YORK.—The inadequacies of naturalization facilities and some of the unnecessary Mops in the process of naturalization were dwelt upon by Merton E. Sturges, Chief Examine r of the Naturalization Bureau of th e Department of Labor, who spoke at meeting of agencies engaged in educa- tional work among Hebrew Shelterin g and Immigrant Aid Society, 425 La- fayette Street. The first difficulty that confronts the would-be American, he said, was that of obtaining a certificate of ar- rival. "This, to my mind," he said, "is an absolutely unnecessary step in the progress of naturalization. It does not amount to anything. It costs the Federal Government in the neigh- borhood of $100,000 a year, consider- ing the number of clerks at the var- ious ports of entry who devote all their time to looking up the records. The next difficulty the alien must f ace is to get his certificate of naturaliz a- tion filed. The final hearing in court is another ordeal that Mr. Sturges said should be revised. Investigations as to eligibility to citizenship have al- ready been made, he said, but the law requires that the applicants must go to court and be examined again by the judge. "I would amend the law," he con- tinued, "to eliminate the appearance of witnesses in court, except in cases where there may he some question as to the competency of the applicant or whether he should be admitted to cit- izenship. This would mean about five or ten cases out of 100 where witnes- ses would he required to appear in court. Instead of doing it haphazard- ly, as it is now done, I would suggest that a list he presented to the court containing the names of cases which have been investigated. I would have the names called by the Clerk of the court. I would have them come for- ward by nationality, say, all subjects of Russia would come forward first, take the oath of allegiance in a digni- fied way. I would have certificates of naturalization prepared in advance no that when an applicant is admitted to citizenship, the application would be given to him right there. Then I would have the Judge of the court de- liver to these citizens a good, sound talk on citizenship. I would also have perhaps, a prominent citizen present extending to him the hand of a broth- er citizen. In this way we would make a group of citizens who would be in sympathy with the Government of the United States." KEREN HAYESOD HAS $1,450,000 IN CASH NEW YORK.—(.1. T.
