men who presented themselves before
your lordship as representatives of
the Ashkenazi committee or the Agu•
lath Israel. Your lordship apears to
have regarded this deputation as rep-
resentative of the entire Orthodox
community and concluded that the
Orthodox community is opposed to
the Zionist aims in this country.
"In our capacity as the supreme
authorized representatives of this
homeland of the Jewish people and
in our capacity as the responsible
heads of the Orthodox Jewry, it is
our duty to inform your lordship that
this deputation consisted of private
individuals who possess no authority
to speak on behalf of am' section of
Jewry, much less on behalf of the
Orthodox community, which is amazed
that these persons dared to appear
before your lordship to make such
statements in its behalf.
Orthodoxy's Ideals.
The entire community is aston-
ished that from the thousands and
tens of thousands of Jews in this
country, three or more persons could
be received by your lordship and
could attempt to mislead you to be-
lieve that they were the representa-
tives of that Orthodox Jewry whose
most sacred hope and most lofty ideal
are the return of Israel to Zion, an
ideal which finds expression in the
heart of every Orthodox Jew in his
prayers, morning, noon and night.
"We feel certain now that your
lordship is informed of the facts that
the spirit of fair play which animates
you will lead you to regard this mat-
ter in its true light so that the gen-
eral public shall not be misinformed
and shall recognize that Orthodox
Jewry, together with the whole house
of Israel is animated in every fiber
of its being by the desire fur the re-
turn to Zion. Orthodox Jewry is con-
fident that it is God's will that the
realization of the prophecies of the
return of Israel t•• the land of its in-
heritance should be by the intermedi-
ary of Great Britain.
"We have nut the slightest doubt
that Great Britain will adhere to its
promise in the Balfour Declaration,
which will stand as an eternal sign in
human history."
