mere fact that a man is descended from Jewish ancestors does
not constitute him a Jew in good standing. A man's life and
not the chance of his birth must be the test of his Jewishness
and of his fitness to enter into the circle of Jewish brotherhood.
Just a few unscrupulous persons in any Jewish organization
may do the Jewish cause infinitely more harm than a hundred
upright and honorable Jewish persons may do it good. The
name of the Jew has been sufficiently besmirched by our ene-
mies. It is high time that we Jews began to guard it jealously
and zealously. Our lodges, our clubs and other organizations
that call themselves Jewish should be the first to realize this.
In their hands it lies very largely to make the name "Jew" a
byword or a blessing among men.

A Letter for You.

Dear Boys and Girls:—

(American Isralite)
The province of the Jewish news-
paper is to keep its readers informed
of everything that matters to Jews,
whether these are Jewish happenings
or happenings that are of special in-
terest to Jews without being specific.
ally Jewish. More especially it is the
object of the Jewish press to keep a s
readers informed as to all Jewish
movements, to keep them in touch with
the body of Jewry, especially in the
smaller towns where no congregation
or Jewish organization exists. It is
therefore, not only the duty, but to the
advantage of every rabbi to impress
upon the members of his congregation
the need of having a Jewish paper in
their homes. This is not only for the
benefit of Jewry at large, but the
rabbis must know that the reading of
Jewish papers tends to increnie the
interest of the readers in congrega-
tional work, and, in fact, to make bet-
ter and more active Jews of them—

of Jews and Judaism.
It is perfectly ridiculous therefore for political clubs, for
dancing coteries, for athletic associations, and for other similar
groups to include the word "Jewish" or what to us is even more
objectionable, the word "Hebrew" in their official titles. There
Is nothing Jewish about politics or dancing or boxing or card
playing so far as we know and the mere fact that persons who
happen to be descended of Jewish parents gather themselves
together for these purposes does not signify that they have any
intent to further the interests of Judaism. Nor do they justify
their title even when now and then, they set out to give a charity
ball or some other form of entertainment for this or that Jewish
philanthropy. Nine cases out of ten, the charity ball or the
charity card party is given less with the thought of helping out
a really needy institution than with the idea of giving a good
time to the sponsors of the entertainment. Upon this, we ought
to be perfectly clear.
But there are other and more serious reasons why we have
a right to protest against organizations denominating them-
selves as Jewish who do no essentially Jewish work. These
societies are not only frequently negative or negligible in their
influence upon Jewish life, but they are as often as not abso-
lutely deterimental to it. Especially is this true of those or-
ganizations that find their strength in numbers and who adlnit
to their roster of membership practically any man who claims
to be a Jew, irrespective of his character or his previous record.
We know of instances in which men have sought and oftentimes
succeeded in breaking into such so-called Jewish societies who
have used such affiliation as a means to further their selfish and
unscrupulous purposes. This is particularly true of a certain
type of politician who pointing to the fact that he is a member
of this or that organization intimates that he has behind him
the backing of the hundreds of his fellow members in that
society in this or that political scheme which he desires to put

across.

Thus the Jewish name is sold and bartered. For this reason

it behooves Jewish societies to scan very carefully the character

and the calibre of every candidate for admission. We may not
be entirely Orthodox in our opinion, but we do hold that the

I was sitting alone by the sea shore,

And watching the waves from a steep;
The cloudless sun was just setting,
The waves were lulling to sleep.

I dreamt my mother approached me:

The tears in her eyes were trembling,
Though gloomingly gazing, she smiled.

"0 mother, since I left you,
I found no rest and no friend,
I roam a homeless vagrant
