Grainger Welcomed by Large Audience at Orchestra • Hall—
Shares Honors With Margaret Schuiling.
ERCY GRAINGER, master pianist and well-known com-
poser, appeared at Orchestra Hall on Tuesday night. Shar-
ing honors with him was Miss Margaret Schuiling, a Detroit
singer, who has been attracting much attention in New York.
Mr. Grainger, who has appeared several times before Detroit
audiences, was in excellent form and he revealed such dazzling
technique and musical understanding as to completely captivate
the large audience that heard him. He opened his performance
with a Prelude and Fugue in A Minor for organ and transcribed
for the piano by Bach-Liszt. This proved to be a dry, tedious
finger exercise, lacking in theme, warmth and beauty, and did
not impress the audience to any great extent. This was fol-
lowed by Liszt's "Liebestraum" and "Polonaise," E Major. In
these two numbers he revealed himself to be an artist of great
