W° years ago Victor Kolar made known to a Detroit
audience his suite "Americana," and again last Sunday he
favored us with the second hearing, which met with great
success, both the audience and orchestra joining in to show Mr.
Kolar just what they thought of it. The program also offered
two Detroit soloists, Djina Ostrowska, first harpist of the or-
chestra, and Maurice Williart, a Belgian baritone, now residing
in Detroit. The rest of the program was made up of the well-
known Strauss (Johann, not Richard) waltz, "Roses From the
South," and Massenet's "Scenes Napolitanies." Mr. Kolar
writes transparently and charmingly, showing great skill in
orchestration and with a variety of color. The suite is com-
posed of four movements, "North," "West," " ou " and
"East." The "South" movement is the most poetically con-
ceived in any in the suite and is music of pointed expression.
Into this movement Mr. Kolar has put a beautiful solo bit for
the violin, which gave Mr. Schkolnik, our eminent concert-

Elaine Hannuerstein's followers in

they are legion—will receive the an-

genuine pleasure. Miss Hammerstein

her finest screen production to date,

another big bill of Marcus Loew vau-

"Handcuffs or Kisses" is the first of
a new series of pictures that are being
produced with Miss Hammerstein as

In Italy Arrigo Serato, who will be
the soloist with the Detroit Symphony
Orchestra Sunday, Dec. 18, at Or-
chestra Hall, is considered the great-
est living Italian master of the bow.
Not long ago he was called from
Rome, where he lives, by the munici-
pality of Genoa to appear at a civic
concert in that city, where a signal
honor was bestowed upon him. Pa-
ganini's violin, a Gunnery del Jesu,
presreved in the museum there, was
taken out and loaned to Serato to
play on at this concert, the first time
anyone had played on it since Pa-
ginini's death. It is said that since
Paginini, Serato is the only violinist
of great gifts Italy has given to the
world.
Ile combines with Paginini's sort
of virtuosity so much of the impas-
sioned warmth of the Latin tempera-
ment that he has been called The
Caruso of the Violin" for his luscious,
beautiful singing tone. The spiritual,
poetic and intellectual qualities that
make an artist great are at his com-
mand, yet one is ever mindful of his
Italian blood, which penetrates
through every phase, enhancing the
music with true emotion and feeling.

at her home Sunday evening, Dec. 11,

contributed to the evening's entertain-

selected musical numbers. Mrs. Made-

among an appreciative audience. Mr.

"mental telepathy" aroused much ex-
citement and interest. Isidore Koplo-
