DR. JOSEPH SILVERMAN
AMONG THE SPEAKERS

NEW YORK- -(J .C. BA—Twelve
hundred Jews, fur the most part Zi-
onists but with it sprinkling of non-
Zionists, attended a banquet on Sun-
day evening, Nov. 13, tendered as a
reception to the Karen Ilayesod dele-
iration, consistnig of Nahufn Sokolow,
Prof. Otto Warburg, Vladimir Jabot-
insky .and Dr, Alexander Goldstein,,
who arrived in this country last week.
In addition to the guests of Imon
prominent seats on an elevated dais
were occupied by Samuel Unterinyer,
toastmaster of the banquet; Herman
Conheim, l'eter Schweitzer, Stun
Lamport, Louis Robi-an, Judge Dan-
Iienbaum of Texas, Morris Itotben-
berg, Harry Fishel, Rabbi Nathan'
Kress, Rabbi Meier Berlin, David
l'inski, editor of the daily Zeit, and
Rabbi Joseph Silverman of Temple
Emanuel, while seated at Ticakliy to - '
Ides were Louis Marshall, Julius Ros-
„n•ald, Edward Lauterbach, Jeffer-
ain Seligman, Dr. S. Benderly and
many other 'imminent Jews.
Outlines Keren H•yesod.
After a prayer had been offered,
Untermyer read an address of
welcome in which he outlined the
basic principle of the Karen Ilay•sod,
stating that it was wide enough and
inclusive enough for Zionists as well
as non-Zionists "if there be such,”
and nationalists as well as anti-na-
tionalists to meet under its banner.
The toastmaster made a passing ref-
erence to the popular question of
disarmament and then proceeded to
introduce the chief guest of the oc-
casion.
Nahum Sokolaw, chairman of the
World Zionist Executive Committee
who visited America some nine years
ago, was greeted with much enthusi-
asm, not excluding the new Custom-
ary, spontaneous and perhaps there-
fore unharmonious, singing of the
Ilatikvah. Mr. Sokolow dilated on
the spiritual and actual need of a
Jewish Palestine which required for
midable efforts and unceasing activ-
ity. "In the name of these," he said,
"we have come to you"—to make
the ideal a reality was his intimation.
The Zionist leader then pictured the
future Jewish homeland and called
forth much applause with his sugges-
tion that a Jewish Palestine will be
"a living Bible," a land after the
ideals of the Scriptures and the Pro-
phets.

Rabbi Silverman's Address.
Attention was strained when Rabbi
Joseph Silverman of Temple Eman-
uel, inveterate anti-Zionist, rose to'
speak. "As I entered the banquet
hall," he said "someone turned to me
and asked, 'Is Saul also among the'
Prophets?'" The Rabbi countered
