last Tuesday night, once more established the place of leader-
ship to which that congregation is entitled among her sister
congregations in the land. We feel justified in saying this not
primarily because of the numerical strength of the organiza-
tion. In the last analysis mere numbers are oftentimes the
least reliable index to efficiency on the part of a religious so-
ciety. We do not base our assertion on the material prosperity
of Temple Beth El, for as frequently as not men will give liber-
ally of their material resources to an organization, but they
will be beggarly in the moral support which they give it.
What we say of the local congregation justifies itself, we
believe, in the spirit of the congregation and in its conception
of the part and place that a religious organization ought to
take in the life of the community. No congregation in a great
metropolis has a right to consider itself successful or as meeting
its obligations and its opportunities until it has touched directly
or indirectly the spiritual life of every man, woman and child
within its membership and until as well it has left its impress
upon the whole community life.
Too many congregations there are in this land and some of
them congregations of wealth and numbers which so far as
warming the hearts of the people is concerned; so far as affect-
ing the living and the thinking of their constitunet membership
is concerned; so far as shaping the ideals of their young men
and women is concerned ; so far as touching for good the larger
social life of the community is concerned, might as well not be
at all.
Temple Beth El has sensed in a rather high degree the
bounden obligation that rests upon it to preach from its pulpit
a living message and through its constituent societies to render
a real service in the furtherance of every civic, social, educa -

Dr. Freehof's Lectures

The Men's Club of Temple Beth El has again put the entire
Jewish community of our city in its debt by arranging the
splendid course of lectures on "The Jewish Liturgy," the first
of which was delivered by Prof. Solomon B. Freehof last Friday
night. These lectures are highly instructive and inspirational.
They touch the very depths of the soul life of the Jew and they
will go far, we believe, to stimulate the Jewish consciousness
of the people.
In arranging study classes of this kind, the Men's Club of
the Temple is doing the very thing which ought to be the busi-
ness of such an organization, but which unhappily is not usually
the case. A great majority of organizations nominally Jewish
are Jewish only in name and in point of membership. If, how-
ever, we are Jews essentially because of our religious convic-
tions and ideals, it follows logically that only then has an organ-
ization a right to call itself Jewish, if it does something for the
stimulation of the Jewish religious life.
In the particular work begun last year under the direction
of Professor Englander and now continued by Professor Free-
hof, the Men's Temple Club has set an example to other similar
organizations and it is gratifying to note that already men's

Temple Clubs in other cities are inquiring as to the methods
here pursued.
Since the "sin of ignorance" in regard to his own religious
literature and philosophy is perhaps the greatest sin of which
the Jew may rightly be accused, no small service will have
been rendered to American Jewry if through the inspiration of
our local organization similar work will be taken up by men's
clubs in other parts of the country.

But tell me, grandmother," I

they once knew?"
"Yes, all children do. But there

hung open. I listened breathlessly.
What a marvellous child that must

" 'Be dumb!' cried the rabbi, as 10
men, each one wrapped in his Talith,
entered.
"The child ceased. Silence reign-

spread out his hands and spoke; 'Be-

Descend, descend, 0 Sabbath Princess,
With rays of Shechinah in your eyes,
Descend and bring us peaceful tidings,
From yonder gently dreaming skies!
Behold, in darkness. and in sadness
We wander here, we climb, we grope;
Descend and give us Faith and Gladness,
Descend and give us Light and Hope!

Descend, descend, 0 Sabbath Princess,
For we are weary here and blind,
Descend and lighten all the burdens
Of dreary souls and faithless mind.
The paths of life are rough and thorny,
Our feet are bleeding, bleeding sore,
Descend and bring us Heaven's promise,
And Sabbath peace forevermore.
