School and the Young People's ac-

ing of the Sabbath services, preaches
on alternate Sabbath services,
preaches on alternate Sabbaths, and
is to occupy the pulpit as preacher
once a month on Sundays and on
other important occasions in Con-
gregational life.
In a brief talk, Rabbi Berkowitz
thanked the community for the gen-
erous reception tendered him.
"I will do my best in the days to
come," the young Rabbi said, "to
show, by the efforts that I will put
forth in the tasks assigned to me,
how deeply I appreciate the kindness
and generosity of hosts of people.
When one finds that his lifework ex-
ceeds his fondest dreams, there is no
question of where his heart lies."
Sabbath School Overcrowded.
Israel Cohn, chairman of the Sab-
bath School Board, reported com-
mendable progress, in spite of the in-
adequate facilities and equipment at
its disposal.
The work of the school during the
year was carried on by 28 teachers,
four giving double service through
two sessions, and five librarians and
assistants. The course of study in-
cludes a survey of Jewish history, a
study of comparative religions, of
Jewish ceremonials and institutions
and gives to the higher classes some
acquaintance with Jewish literature
of the biblical and post-biblical pe-
riod. Lessons in practical philanth-
ropy are taught through the Louis
Selling self-sacrifice fund and the
birthday fund.
"It is the purpose of our school
not merely to teach the facts of Jew-
ish history," Mr. Cohn said, "but
more to deepen the Jewish conscious-
ness of our children."
In addition to the regular Sunday)
sessions of the school, there is also a
class for the study of Hebrew, which
meets on Saturday morning, the Con-
firmation class which is under the di-
rect supervision of Rabbi Franklin.
The Pontiac Sabbath School, a branch
of the Beth El Religious School, re-
ported splendid results during the
year.
Mr. Cohn reported an interesting
experiment that is being tried out
with success. The school has been
turned into a self-governing institu-
tion, known as the City of Justice of
the State of Beth El. This City of
Justice has its own officers, chosen
from among the pupils, including a
mayor, city council and other city
officials. The main object of this
plan is the establishment of a honor
system among the pupils.
